Hey guys,
I have an idea.
I have all this old print sitting around from CDs I've pressed, and my thought was: take the print and a jewel case, and seal it with a web address inside that takes them to cdbaby for a free download of that CD on MP3.
I know a lot of artists have old print laying around that's just waiting to be useful, and the take-home pay on CDBaby Mp3s is really good. So instead of 'dropcards', why doesn't CDBaby just develop a download page that's password-protected (and maybe supply us with the unique passwords), and then we'll include the link in these sealed MP3-download-kits, which look just like normal CD cases, without the CD (or maybe with a free blank CD inside).
Now, for the money part of this...something would have to be worked out, where maybe they were sold by the artist for $10, and if they are redeemed at CDbaby for Mp3s, then CDBaby docks the artist's account for their share (90 cents). This would come off whatever money is outgoing to the artist. Or, a set-up fee would be collected by CDBaby, which would include a deposit ($10?) to cover the first 11 album downloads. I guess the download codes would have to be unique...maybe there's an argument for the artist paying for the unique codes in advance for .90 each.
What does everybody think about this?

Hey Jacob,
I just woke up this morning, and I'm trying to visualize your idea (after just reading it, of course). I'm one of those musicians, who would rather see a physical example, than to read it on paper. I think you lost me when you started adding 'options' & 'set-up fees' to your idea. So, I want to ask you if you could make a video on YouTube (or something similar, with a link), physically explaining your concept. You might have a good idea, but I think a little '1-minute vid' would get straight to the point. Old-schoolers, like me, can feel it better that way, haha...
Have a good one, bro'!

Hey Jacob,
That sounds like a really cool idea. I think you even might be able to implement it now! Here's how it could work:
Take your laptop to your show with you (this might require a mobile cell modem, or just venues with wi-fi, which are more and more common). Offer "mp3 download kits" for slightly less than your CD -- exactly as you described. When somebody wants one, order the MP3 from CDBaby.com but put in their info -- you can even accept credit cards, or they can pay cash and you can use your credit card. Print download instructions on the back of your prints and write their login and password on the card once you've ordered.
There you have it! CD Baby download kit!
Cheers,
Ben
