Need your feedback! If this has been asked before, then apologies.
I'm new to internet marketing have got a new cd out and have been contacted by a web radio station asking for a promo CD. It's no problem in principle, but is there much point getting your music played on these channels if the DJ does'nt plug your website afterwards? Does this work for you??

for what it's worth: a similar thing happened to me - sent the CDs - a song got played maybe once at each "station" - so, did it work for me? not sure! if your policy is: "i want my music out there so why not try something that dosn't cost me much" i'd say go for it. it's probably better than giving a CD to someone who i'm pretty certain won't ever listen to it (unfortunately frineds & acquaintances often fall into this category). my experience shows me people who pay for my CDs listen to them - and share them with others. freebies get tossed into the trash. my experience - probably different from others.
that said - believe in your music, and proceed with confidence.
    Peace.

Maybe I paranoid, but I have sent CDs to several stations over the past two years that have requested them and never got any play.
I also know another CD Baby artists that sent the same guy one twice because he asked and then said the first one was lost and to send another
She did send a second one and never got any play either.
There is a few sellers on ebay who sell tons of new Indy CD lots and I can't help but wonder where they are getting them if you catch my drift.

No need to send a CD to us to get airplay.

You can create a free artist profile and upload 3 songs at a time
and have immediate airplay on our radio stations.

We have radio stations for every genre that represented on
    CDBaby.

SongVault was created to help artists on CDBaby get further
marketing and promotion by having listeners filter the songs by
voting what songs stay on our network and also get featured in
our SongVault Directory. This helps to filter out the "best of the
best" songs based on listeners votes.

We will be adding the ability for listeners to create their own
playlists to have their own customized radio player by the end of
    August.

Feel free to upload your songs on our site and save your money
    in sending a CD.

    Best Regards,

    Paul John

I am a podcaster. I only try to request cd's from artists that I "expect" to play. I put expect in quotes simply because, sometimes it's difficult to find the right mix of artists. Also, I'd ask you to think about things from my side of the coin. If I always played the same 8-10 artists in high rotation then what would make me any different than mainstream radio? That having been said. I do "try" (there go those quotes again) to play artists more than once. Keep in mind, that I do a self-produced weekly podcast, and much like the artists are self promoting the podcast. Artists don't often link up to the sites/blogs/podcast feeds that they've appeared on either, so it's a 2 way street in terms of recognition.

thanks for all your feedback, and it is good to see both sides of the coin, I guess internet stations, podcasters and bands all have the same challenges - capturing an audience. As for playlists, I suppose if you played every recording made only once you could be on air for the rest of your life. This is a big learning curve, fortunately I don't have to rely on internet sales for an income but there are other motivators. A wise man once told me if you treat a business like a hobby it will pay like one..probably sums my methods up at the mo :)

Yup...big thing is to unwrap those cd's and stamp them as promo...or they will end up at a record shop or on amazon...
Look up Midnight Reign on amazon...The Disc "Never Look Back" is on sale by 10 different vendors...and i know it was from when we did a college promo mailing and some cd's weren't stamped...or unwrapped...JM

SongVault is a pretty cool way to network your music. Their interface is user friendly, fan voting is just as easy and there is no one getting in between the musician and the fan. If a song gets approval from fans it moves into a higher level and eventual placed on their radio vault. I've been fortunate to have a number of songs placed there. I like Paul's concept, but question the amount of traffic songvault is receiving at this stage.

My favorite radio site is Fame Games (www.meermusic.com). They've also been really good to me but they just recently got picked up by ABC radio which means HUGE exposure for indie artists. Just one thing: you could be in for some hard honest answers about your music. Things you disagree with or never knew about. I think it's a great way to realize what a GREAT song requires.

Off the subject of radio a tad but still applies somewhat: I used to submit my stuff everywhere but with all the stuff out there and new stuff everyday it's really hard! I have decided to try and stay with the top 5 ~ 7 most popular fan sites. Everywhere helps I know, but with time a factor too, I work the big sites as best I can.

However, performing is completely different. I try to build a fan base around me and hope it grows. In todays world as a musician, I believe that performing is 90% the most important part of making a living in the music industry.

a little off topic at the end (sorry).
Best luck to all fellow muso's.
