Anybody know how iTunes calibrates the popularity graphs they assign to each song? Is it daily? Weekly? Is there some long term number in the equation somewhere? As I've watched mine ebb and flow, I've noticed that it for sure has some immediate changes once something is bought. Maybe that just depends on the overall volume of sales?
Anyway- just wondered if some of yall had more experience with this. Thanks- TJ

Hi TJ,
Listens and searches don't affect the charts, but purchases do. If you are looking at songs on your page, the bar graph can be somewhat deceiving. What seems to be more accurate is the text portion of your main page that lists your top five songs. If a song is number 5 today and then someone purchases it (and no one purchases any of your other songs), that song will be number one very shortly, usually within a day or two.
If you have cover songs, or songs that just happen to be titled the same as other artists' songs, you can also see your song move up that list of songs when someone purchases your song.
I have an entire album of cover songs. One of the songs I do is also done by 15 other people. It's easy to see when someone buys my song when it moves from number 11 to number 6, for example.
I was curious just as you were, so I purchased one of my songs. I noted it's position before and after purchase. Within 24 hours, it had moved up several spots on the list. ITunes seems to be pretty accurate and timely, from what I've seen. After monitoring it for a month and tracking song positions, I'm confident that purchases are reflected rather quickly.

Is there any way the artist can track digital sales on a daily basis? I am advertizing on yahoo and it would be helpful to know if the money spent on advertising is worth it, or finding out it was just a waste of money after waiting 2 months to see the results.

Not with any of the outside sellers (iTunes, Rhapsody, Amazon,
etc.) They all report a month or two after the sale happened.
But if you point them at your CD Baby page to buy the MP3s here,
you'll see it same-day.
