Echospin offer a digital distribution solution and it seems to be popular with many artists on MySpace.
Does anybody have any experience with them, is it a company CD Baby should be talking to?
Would an artist getting involved with them cause any conflict with their CD Baby's current digital distribution?

their fee structure is a little steep, for an unproven outlet?! $50 setup for one record, for one service? :|

Sorry to break in, I'm one of Echospin's 2 founders and it's a
thrill for me and my co-founder, Damian, to be discussed on
cdbaby, even briefly!

Tony, thanks for noticing us! As it happens, a few years ago,
when we came up with Delivery Wizard/AlbumLink, just about
the first person we called was Derek, who was encouraging
about the prospect of using Echospin "if" he ever decided to sell
downloads on cdbaby.com. After completing the epic re-write of
cdbaby.com, he decided to go exclusively with .zip file
downloads on cdbaby.com instead of offering the Delivery
Wizard, which we had offered to plug right into the site. With
regard to CD Baby DD, there is no conflict as far as we know. We
would love to make AlbumLink and the Wizard available to all CD
Baby artists via DD and we have had some discussions with the
DD team. The main reason we're told we're not an option is that
DD has a policy against distributing to companies that require
an artist to take action in order to benefit from the opportunity.
With AlbumLink, the required action is that you have to
copy/paste the link (it's just a hyperlink) onto your site or
MySpace page. We can see their point, but naturally, we think
the pros outweigh the potential cons.

Is "i dunno" an anonymous poster? Hmm. We think that we're
pretty well proven after +3 years in business years and hundreds
of thousands of happy fans and dozens of independent artists.
We're small but we think we punch above our weight. Except in
the marketing department. We are exclusively word-of-mouth,
so maybe we're a little sensitive to what people say about us. In
terms of pricing, what "i dunno" forgot to mention is that we
only deduct $2 for each album sold, $1 for an EP. You set your
own price. Anyway, sorry to interrupt.
Take care,
Jon (jon /at/ echospin /dot/ com)

I checked out echospin, and it seems pretty cool. But customers have to download echospins program first to purchase music - I can see that as a big obstacle.... I Can't see why CDbaby doesnt offer a widget I can import into my webpage.

Hi Brad, I'm the other Echospin founder. Thanks for the nice feedback!
I understand your concern about the Delivery Wizard plugin being a bit of an obstacle, but I can tell you that we see a very high conversion rate. The Wizard makes transacting/downloading so easy that folks generally seem willing to give it a try -- we think this has as much to do with the positive word of mouth as it does with the simple, guided and lightweight install process.
Our ultimate goal is to offer the best possible download solution to everyone, no matter their preference re: the plugin or what platform they may be using. This is why we just launched a manual option for free downloads, and will be rolling out the same manual option for paid transactions in May. Feel free to check it out: http://echospin.com/dtr2008sampler
Cheers,
Damian
