I am quite surprised that our Digital Distribution sales through CD Baby have nearly surpassed our CD sales. That's not what I expected!
Now I'm thinking that maybe we should OPT IN for the additional digital services through CD Baby. How many of you have opted for this? Have you found it worthwhile? Any of you have feedback on this?

I have opted-in everything as I see no bad side effects.. More people will hear your stuff.. More people will see you on the database.. I haven't had a single sale through the alternate stores yet though.. All ITunes/Rhapsody/Napster for me so far..

I opted in for all the digital stuff. Why not? Digital downloads are the wave of the future. Have sold more downloads than cd's. That is fine with me. Love the fact you can download the album from cdbaby. Downloads are gravy.

Yes! I find it is best to opt into everything digital that you can. It also is helpful to get into as many websites as you can on your own. The services provided by CDBABY are awesome and I have to say that all are must haves as far as distrobution goes.

Hello...
I had signed up for Amazon Advantage separately a while back.
My understanding is the CD BABY has a relationship with Amazon and that my music will be posted there through this arrangement. Correct?
Will my prior relationship with Amazon interfere and prevent my music from being posted or credited?
Please advise on my best course of action. Should I discontinue the Advantage program, so as not to get the systems confused with each other. The project is -

I recently spoke to Derek and the Amazon deal covers digital downloads. I also have an Amazon Advantage account for John's physical CD's. There should not be a conflict.

I opted in for everything. My main reasons (which may sound weird)
Before CDBABY It was easier to just download our albums for free if you searched for us on the web.
So I came to the conclusion that saturating the market in all ways possible was the best thing to do so that people could find the music.
The album is still on all sorts of torrent sites, but it is now much easier to find, and purchase.

Over the course of this year, as a retailer, we have had to start considering digital sales. And that is not easy for a small independent retailer.
But we have figured it out. Our website, www.trampsmusic.com, by the end of Jan 08, will offer download sales. We have to. Our sales of music dropped off over 50%. Not a small number!
Hope you all have a great and prosperous 08. Give us a ring if you don't see your music on our site, we would love to have you. We are trying to find more ways to get MP3's for our site.

I've had a great experience with the digital retailing, and it's surpassed my physical sales by a huge margin at this point. However, I'm beginning to get concerned because as far as I can tell from MY account, none of the major outlets have reported in over a month. I'm sure that it's just me because someone else would have said something if it was widespread... but I've gone from about $200 in sales from iTunes reported in November to absolutely not a peep from them in December and I'm puzzled because I think it's unlikely that, even if my sales may have dwindled or dropped since the time covered by that report, they've gone down to NIL.
I wish there was some way to keep better track of online sales, but of course there isn't and I don't know how there could be. It's not like Apple's gonna pop off an e-mail every time a track sells. I just hate waiting months to find out anything. Ah well, it's better than a poke in the eye. I'm grateful for the venue for sales, at any rate.

dWith the exception of I-tunes uk, I've had nothing coming from i-tunes since Nov. as well. I wonder if it has something to do with getting the better bitrates to them as they did recently.

Has nothing to do with anything : their payment-date varies by a week or two, so sometimes we get Apple's report and payment on the 23rd of the month, sometimes not until the 5th of the next month.
Don't jump to conclusions yet. Next sales report will be imported soon.

I think in the future that all payments will be on time.As a artist I am thankful for Derek and cdbaby.I know this is a new digital music world but i hope thay treat the independent Artists with respect and be fair with our payments. It really helps with the promotions you need to know whats working and whats not.Knowing what you sells helps on promotion and production. It does no good if they are reporting 3 or 6 months late.Whats in today might not be in tomorrow and the early bird always gets the worm.

They are definitely on time, though! As compared with traditional distribtion that takes 3-6 months to report sales, iTunes is amazing, reporting sales reliably 4-6 weeks after the month's end.
It's funny how people's promptness expectations change. For years, CD Baby always paid at 2am Monday night, then I wrote an update to the script that did more verification but took a few more hours, and each morning we'd get people screaming between the hours of 2am and 7am, worried that they hadn't gotten paid yet.
Would be quite amazing if the music industry got things that tight : where people expected full payment and reporting within HOURS of the sale, instead of months, weeks, or even days.

I didn't intend to whine or appear demanding, I just felt like there was a hiccup in what had previously appeared to be a fairly regular schedule of consistent (but not unreasonable) delay in iTune's reporting, and I was hoping to discover whether it was just me not selling anything or a thing commonly experienced. I'm not impatient, I just had become accustomed to a certain thing and then it was different so I asked about it. Everything's fine!

Faster reporting from the distro outlets would be awesome, since the ~3 month lag time messes with my head when it comes to impact.
If I move the iTunes link from the left side of my site to the right side, I have to wait half a year to see if it performs better or worse than before...

I really like the way Derek has setup the accounting. Everything is precise, right down to the penny. What big record company would ever give you that or even give you the time of day.

Thanks for the update, Derek. Having those dates takes some of the mystery out of iTunes' apparently willy-nilly payment reporting.

Thanks again Derek for shedding some light on the situation. I must admit I also was a little concern myself. We can,t exspect to get the same amount of sales each and every month There will be a slow month I believe from time to time.

In October, iTunes paid for Sept sales. In November, iTunes paid for Oct sales. In December, nothing, even though I know for a fact that I had sales in Oct and Nov that have yet to be paid. ITunes has been very consistent every month, but in December, no sales were reported. Very strange.

Thanks for the input everyone. We are still arranging the deals to get some of the digital content. We are actively looking for content. We are actively adding content (even if you can not see it yet). Yes CDbaby is going to be one of our physical and digital providers. It has also taken us longer than expected to get some things figured out on our end.

More than 95 percent of my income comes from iTunes, Rhapsody
and Napster. So I'm waiting for Amazon to top this. I would opt out
of all the other shops if I could.
But thanks for setting this up. It's great to have worldwide
independent digital distribution.

I have never had any doubts when it comes to payments from CDBaby. I just see the email from them and go, "Oh, I got paid!" Remember when they first started this digital distribution thing and then decided NOT to charge anyone for it and offered to refund the setup fee? What other company would do that? I worry more about eating enough fresh vegetables. Being paid by CDBaby is the furthest thing on my mind.

For Anything Box and The Diary, online sales have eclipsed physical CDs by over 150%!!! Which has made us re-think how we will release music in the future.
In the case of The Diary's Separate album, we pressed 2,000 CDs, but most of the sales have been through online providers. With CDBaby also selling downloads, and Amazon getting into the fray we suspect that the future is set.
Think of the pollution we will avoid (from the plastic waste) and the trees we will save...
Go for it!

Definitely great to save plastic. We put our CD out in a cardboard cover. It was cheaper, takes up 1/4 of the space in our apartments, has no plastic AT ALL in it and has never hurt us in terms of getting the CD noticed. Some radio stations say they prefer jewel cases- it didn't hurt us.
Just be sure your band name and CD name are on the spine. Save lots of plastic! And viva digital too!

Hello fellow musicians.
Do you experience sales drop in the recent month?
Mine allmost went to halt.
What can be the reason. Maybe the competition has grown enorm
big. I don't advertise on Itunes.

You may have hit on something. It does seem that sales have dropped for me too..maybe there is more competition from the outside and I don't know anything about advertising on i-tunes. However, if sales are dropping, I'm am sure that Derek will be working hard to make positive things happen for cd baby and cd baby artist.

could be the economy somewhat, and maybe a litte more

Sales haven't dropped there are just more and more artists taking a sliver of pie.
Apple is selling Logic Studio for $500.00
Productions costs are barely a barrier anymore. More product, less individual sales and now all the upstart socia;l media sites are giving away more music than ever.

Hi all
I'd just like to know if I'm alone here in the community who
makes only 50cent or less per CD per month in the digital
distribution.
At my own site I get 150 visitors everyday. There are 34 links to
Itunes, Emusic, Rhapsody, Msn, Napster by my 7 CDs. On the
net
I'm spread over 150 musicsites where there are additional links
to these digital distributin sites.
But maybe I should do some more promotion to lift the $0.5
dollar up a bit.
What is your suggestion?
Thanks, Attila

Hey man, better than nothing! I made almost $20 this month on 9 albums :)
What's next Madison Square Garden?
All kidding aside, distribution without marketing doesn't mean a thing. Its incumbent on the artist or their management to promote the product. CD Baby is just a portal of opportunity for motivated shameless self promoters..

First off, I think CD Baby is great.
In terms of digital distribution, I assume CD Baby obtains a "cut" from all the distributers that sell our music. Is this correct? I understand that CD Baby does not "own" the music, so is this "cut" they may receive regarded as a distribution expense to the distributor?
Really, I am just curious how the whole thing works. Digital Distribution is great, I would just assume CD Baby would not be doing it for nothing... nor should they.
Thanks,
|

Brendan,
CD Baby takes a 9% cut of any download, which is a really good deal for indie artists.
Derek is working real hard for his 9%. It's a lot of work for them to code all the songs specific to each download site.
Thanks, Derek.
