Businessrelation between CD Baby and Last.fm?
posted by Mario Strack on Tuesday December 04 2007 @ 12:44PM PST
Digital Distribution My digital delivery list shows that CD Baby put my songs to Last.fm (I already uploaded these myself 5 months ago, by the way, but with no possibility to submit UPC or ISRC codes). So is there some kind of serious business relation between CD-Baby and Last.fm?
Is there any monetary arrangement planned for the future?
Something like collecting radioplay royalties for us independent artists?

    Regards,
    Mario Strack

I heard last.fm would pay us through CD Baby for what they stream through their net radio; however, this raised a question. Will my album sent from CD Baby replace automatically the same album I have uploaded to last.fm? If not, do I have to remove it to get paid?

By the way, does anyone know if music sent from CD Baby has a particular tag to identify them? If so, it would be probably possible to listen to a tag radio which plays only music sent from CD Baby. That should be just great!

    Deceitful Denial – Derek’s favorite PR tool…

by Derek at CD Baby on Monday December 10 2007 @ 11:43AM PST [ reply | parent ]
    Excuse me?

I don't know all the answers to kgoto's questions yet, since the deal with Last.fm is still working out some details.

So I said I'd find out the answers and announce in a couple days, and now you say that was a "deceitful denial" and that it's a "favorite tool"?

If you're harbouring a grudge about something in the past just say so, silent-anonymous-person.

Wow - I was just preparing to create an official Last.FM account, then got confused and paranoid about their licensing agreement and thought, "Hm - I wonder if CDBaby has anything about them?"

This is great - so I'm hopeful that I will soon be able to manage my relationship with Last.FM strictly through CDBaby. Please say it's so, 'cause I can't much trust anyone else out there.

    Derek,

Don't sweat these loonies. 99.9 percent of us are ecstatic about the work you do. I'm excited about last.fm, and hope that you develop more of these kind of deals with companies that fall somewhere in between distribution/net radio/social networking. They have great potential for indie artist discovery and driving sales to outlets that CDbaby supplies. Good for everyone. PS. Pandora please! ! !

Exciting news indeed! I also would like to see some kind of
relationship with Pandora. It's quite an amazing way to discover
    new music.

Also, what's the deal with Amazon mp3 downloads. It's actually
turning out to be a really good service, and would like to see our
    stuff up there soon.

    Thanks CDBaby!

That negative comment is so thoroughly wrong and
incomprehensible that , for only a moment, it made me wonder
about the motivations of the author before just dismissing it.
I'm quite excited about this last.fm thing whatever the achieved
permutation. As long as it's under the auspices of cdBaby and
Derek's concerned and savvy direction, I'm quite confident that our
best interests are well served. With much appreciation for Derek
and CdBaby , Happy seasonal cheer ! jz

I'll add, that after their experiences with SnoCap, that not only
are their best interests lying with their clients, that Derek and all
at CDBaby are also a heck of a lot more wise in how they get
into agreements with companies now. Not that their track record
wasn't already superlative, but now it's jut *gotta* be even
    better.

I have faith that this will be a Good Thing for us.

Keep it up, Derek, and let us know when you're ready, when
you've got the info you need to relay the situation properly.

And yea, I briefly wondered what that poster's motivation was,
but only briefly before dismissing it as heckling or sour grapes
or something... gotta love 'teh internets'. :\

    Here is another anonymous comment.

I am really appreciative that Derek and everyone at CDBABY have made it possible for my bands independent album to make over $2000 CASH from internet downloads in 1 year.

    Thank you Derek.

Oh, I'm getting questions lined up now that I hope will be answered.

Like how some of my albums that are showing up on LastFM now are incomplete.

And how some are full-length listens and some are :30.

And if, when people click the Buy Album link, it could take them to CDBaby instead of Amazon.

And if we're getting paid for streamed listens.

And on and on and on. :)

    Interesting times, for sure.

    by on Thursday December 13 2007 @ 08:18PM PST [ reply | parent ]
Yes, the Amazon link is the biggest problem. One of my albums
that I didn't upload to Last.fm has apparently been uploaded by CD
Baby, but as it isn't in my label account I can't change the buy link!

    by Joachim on Tuesday January 01 2008 @ 06:44AM PST [ reply | parent ]
All our label's albums uploaded by CDBABY got automatically listed in our Last.fm account so I'm able to manage shop links and artist's stats

Keep in mind that CD Baby has some serious competitors out there trying to get CD Baby artists on their website and sell. Dirty politics often work for elections, why not in business? Name smearing, or something like that. That's what you get for being exceptional at what you do, keeping your word, and following through! The funny thing about it, though, is that this has happened a few times on this site and has backfired! For every little doubt or negative comment, there are at least twenty or more hugs and kisses thrown down in response.

Hugs and kisses to Derek and the CD Baby crew!

Hi. I am wanting to sign up with cd baby but after reading, and hearing conflicting reports, I am hesitant for the following reasons:
    1. I have signed up with Last.fm but battling to get airplay, or associate myself with artists to get airplay. I paid for a powerplay of 100 hits and got a great response, 91 plays, 15 skips and only 2 bans. Does signing up with cd baby mean guaranteed airplay??? Is this all included in the $36 charge etc?
    2. What is the story with Snowcap? I live in Scotland, so therefore cannot set up an account with them. That is bollocks cos I thought this was an international operation. I am currently using a reverbnation player as an add on for my myspace and personal website, and they only offer snowcap as a free option. Last.fm offer recommend 7digital as there free sale site, who only offer 4 free tunes for sale (with no playlist editing, or u have to pay £75(pounds not dollars).
u can see my dilemma. Please advise
    Many thanx
    Simon

    This reply is for Simon…
Signing up with CDBaby offers your artist (band) allot of tools besides the Last.fm relationship. The initial fee pales in comparison to the feature set offered by CDBaby, even before the Last.fm accord. The digital distribution feature alone is worth it (as long as you take advantage of it).

Last.fm is a great community, but the airplay features work best for emerging artists when the artist is getting plays (scrobbles) from lots of users who play the music locally (from their computer). There are no published minimum numbers; however artists that have 10 listeners, with one person who played the band 1000 times, wont fair as well as an artist with 1000 listeners. Airplay on Last.fm is dependent on the similar artists list (not the label suggested). That list can take weeks, months or longer for some artists to generate. Power plays really don’t help the similar artist generation, unless a good number of those listeners start listening to your music afterward.

The best way to take advantage of this is to get your music out there. If your band is active and playing shows, advertise your Last.fm page on your flyers and make sure attendees know where to acquire the mp3’s (like your CDBaby page). Or offer mp3 sampler disks with your Last.fm link on it. Leverage MySpace, and any other format you’ve used in the past. As the scrobbles come in, the database will get a better idea of where to place your tunes on the radio. The artists on Last.fm who have good airplay also have a listener base outside of Last.fm.
Reverbnation has great tools too, but pairing up with CDBaby is far better for distributing your music…internationally and to your hometown.

    BTW – I don’t work for CDBaby or Last.fm
    Good luck..

I love Last.fm and have come to find it extremely useful for creating a buzz. I just logged onto my band page and see that everything is being updated, but the albums I put up on my own are intact. Whether this is CDBaby or Last.fm I don't care.

I think of them as a great radio station to feed music, i.e. 'singles'...

On December 8 Derek said info on last.fm was coming "in a few
days" and over 2 weeks ago info was coming "soon." It's getting

useless... What gives? Can we have some straight answers about
what is happening to our music please?

    by Elliott @ CD Baby on Wednesday January 23 2008 @ 02:25PM PST [ reply | parent ]
    Hi everyone,

My name's Elliott, and I work at CD Baby as the Director of Licensing.

First off, let me apologize for our lack of communication about our partnership with Last.fm. As Derek
posted, their service offering has been changing so much that as soon as we had the information worked-
out for CD Baby artists, their model would change again in some new way.

Secondly, just a quick reminder that you can always call (+1 503 595 3000) or email us
(cdbaby@cdbaby.com) for further clarification on this or any other issue.

All of this being said, I'll now try to explain what Last.fm does, and how it affects you as a CD Baby artist:

    1. If you are signed-up for 75-level or 100-level distribution, then we have (or are in the process of)
    sending your music to Last.

    2. For a while now, Last.fm has worked quite a bit like the internet radio station Pandora, where you can go
to their site, type in an artist name/genre and they will play music from that artist and similar artists (using
    a complex computer algorithm).

    3. Additionally, Last.fm is starting an 'on demand" streaming service (like Rhapsody) where a customer can
pick and choose the songs that they want to stream (as opposed to internet radio- where the music is just
"pushed" to the listener). If a customer streams one of your songs (that CD Baby has delivered to them) you
will get a share of the amount collected that month for subscription services (very similarly to Rhapsody).

    4. Part of the Last announcement is that artists can now sign-up with Last directly, and receive royalties
from them directly. However, given the rates we've negotiated for CD Baby artists, you will always receive
more (even after we deduct 9%) if CD Baby delivers to Last than if you do it on your own (and, of course, we
do this for free with no extra effort on your part).

The final point is what I think we do really well: enable independent artists to get their music to as many
places as possible, and also receive as much compensation as possible- without any additional work. (we
assume you'd rather be making music that setting-up digital distribution :)

I know this is a lot to digest. It might help to cruise over to their site (http://www.last.fm/) and poke around
a bit to get a feel for how it works.

Again, thanks for your patience on this...we think this will be a great way for CD Baby artists to get more
    exposure!

    by Steven on Thursday January 24 2008 @ 07:34PM PST [ reply | parent ]
So, if I read that right, it appears CD Baby is entering deals and
sending out our music to companies BEFORE the details are
firmly in place... Is that wise?

by Derek at CD Baby on Friday January 25 2008 @ 08:18AM PST [ reply | parent ]
Steven : no, we never send your music anywhere without a *great* deal in place. It's just that after the Last.fm deal was signed and we delivered everyone's music, they quickly came up with even more initiatives (like the new ones linked to, above) so that our announcement to our clients was constantly changing. Instead of doing multiple announcements every week tracking all changes we just thought it best to wait until it solidifies, then announce. Sorry for any confusion.

    by Rich Newman on Wednesday January 23 2008 @ 06:07PM PST [ reply | parent ]
I was just reading about last.fm's biz model and decided to see if / how our songs were up there
So I just discovered that 2 of TagYerit's 3 CDs are up on last.fm

I assumed it was CDBaby's doing and found this here discussion.
Very cool, how do I get the 3rd CD up there? And they have a link only to amazon.com where folks are apparently selling promo copies. I'm ok about that, but it would sure be nice if they'd link to CDBaby too.

    Good work!

    by on Thursday January 24 2008 @ 07:53PM PST [ reply | parent ]
Just wondering if by signing up with last.fm as "the artist" it conflicts in any way with the cdbaby account with last.fm and cdbaby's uploading of our stuff. Can I sign up as myself as well? If I upload a song , does it enter in the last.fm WITH our cdbaby uploaded songs or is it "paid" outside of the cdbaby agreement?
    Thanks for any info. jz

    by Andrew Aversa on Friday January 25 2008 @ 10:42AM PST [ reply | parent ]
I'd like to know the answer to this as well... I want to sign up so I can alter my artist page, but don't know how - am I an artist? A label? Neither?

    by Elliott @ CD Baby on Monday February 04 2008 @ 10:23AM PST [ reply | parent ]
Whoever delivers the account receives the royalties...

So, if your album is signed-up with CD Baby for 75-level digital
distribution, then we'll deliver it to Last and pay you the royalties
    when Last pays us.

Or, if as an artist you upload new tracks, then you'd get paid
    (slightly less) directly from them.

    by Kelly Pettit on Thursday January 24 2008 @ 11:15PM PST [ reply | parent ]
    Hey Derek
Do you ever wonder if some of the negitive and selfish comments you receive are actually from competitors in the bus' trying to sour your amazing company? If it is from us musicians it's really disheartening. I've yet to find a reason to not trust CD baby and CD baby saves me tons of time and stress. I would think everyone would be equally as grateful. But as you know, it takes all kinds. Send those people to Jerry Springer and they can get their 15 minutes of deliverance banjo whining there.
    Cheers

Hopefully, you've all already checked out your Last.Fm Submissions - ours went thru CDBaby without a hitch, landed in the right place and didn't mess with the stuff we uploaded ourselves.

Today, I got an email from Last.FM (we're signed up as a label) telling me about their new royalties deal.

If you haven't checked this out - DO SO NOW! And, sign up as a user, and then link you label to that account - then go to Music Manager and start getting familiar with this GUI (it is genius!)

AND, download that scrobbler, start tagging and playing your stuff mixed with other artists you like/are similar to.

    This "is the future"

    We're in!

Ok, so to make this easy for the kids in the back of the room ;) - if we're signed with CDBaby we chose option #3: "I'm ineligible to collect royalties directly. I’m a member of a collection society for Radio and On-Demand use."

    ?

I'm sure last.fm is inundated w/questions about this, but I'm having a heck of a time sorting out what to do: some of my tracks are via CDBaby, some are totally indie, some are registered w/ASCAP, some aren't...Last.fm seems to have only one option for all your bands though...

    by Mindscape Music on Monday January 28 2008 @ 05:40PM PST [ reply | parent ]
Durr - ok, you can indeed choose different options for the different artists on your label. (or your different projects under different names, as the case may be). Go to the Music Manager and choose the different names from the drop-down in the upper right-hand corner.
