idea for CDbaby - raise CD sales - what do you think?
posted by Philip DeStefano on Monday November 12 2007 @ 09:45AM PST
Need your feedback! I've been sampling CDbaby CDs. Recently I emailed CDbaby with this: it takes TOOOO LOOOONG to sample through CDs when shopping. I pointed out that I have bought several CDs. I find them by picking a genre and listen to one CD as a time by clicking on "play all tracks" for a single CD. If I am not attracted to the CD, I click "back" then hit the next CD. This takes a lot of time! I do it while I am working at my desk, or another house chore that is near my computer. But is very time consuming to have to stop and click and stop and click and stop and click - which obviously happens since there are going to be more I don't like than like.

I suggested this: that they have a shuffle set up that jumps through a genre. If they want to just play a minute of each song as they do now, then fine (even better actually since more artist can get heard), but then automatically jump to another sample and have the info available so if I like something I can write the
info down and check out the whole CD. CDbaby said no idea was too 'crazy' .. so there ya go.

    What do you think?

    too crazy !!!
no that sounds really good but a programming nightmare but then they do sell a lot of cds already so the system must work as it is :)

Phillip : Not crazy at all. I've been planning something like that for years. A [PLAY] button at the top of every page, even if that page is a search-result or browse with many albums.

Yes it's a lot of programming to make that happen (and have the PLAY-radio constantly display and link-back to what's playing) - but I hope to do it some day.

Hey Derek - maybe you could start with a play button on gallery pages?

Thanks for your positive view on this Derek-- who knows?-- maybe one day the "Shuffle of tunes" on a site as someone's listening can be a reality and I think anything that can "speed up" the process of a person's decision in terms of purchasing a CD would be helpful--(as long as there's enough time for a person to sink their teeth into via the music at hand-;)

    Best and to dual success(!)..

    It's already there.

Nobody said there was a minimum number of tracks an album has to have.

If you've got a track you're dying to sell and you think there are people who'd buy just that track, set it up as a 1-song album.

Maybe he means mp3 singles, directly from cdbaby, off an already existing cd. which would be impractical to pay for 15 times to make singles available. Is how I was taking it.??

Sounds like CDBaby Radio would be a good idea...have MacinTalk
announce artists and titles and it just plays and plays and plays at
random - maybe within whatever genre the user requests. That
    would be cool!
