    Radiohead - Name Your Price
posted by Lsedai on Monday October 01 2007 @ 11:37AM PDT
News from Outside 1. How do my fellow CDBaby artists feel about this? Will this work for small potatoes indie artists?

    2. I'm sure this question is going to be asked a thousand times over the next few weeks, so I figured I would be the first:

Will CDBaby allow musicians sell digital MP3 downloads in a manner where the customer sets the price?

CDBaby will need to at least cover their expensives, so there will probably need to be a minimum charge. And some artists will not want this setup, so it will definitely need to be an opt-in system.

What do you think? The times are a changing...

Great - they can afford to do this as a marketing gimmick. I can't afford to. I suspect a large number of people with elect to pay nothing.

I've been trying this with the digital download of a new EP release. I offered this deal to people on my mailing list. I said $7.99 is the list price; you can pay nothing to as much as you want. So far (after two full days) the average price is slightly below list, with some people paying up to twice as much. So far the largest % of people simply pay the list.

I'm never giving CD's away for free again...
    I can't afford that...

Not only that, but it depreciates your value in your fans eyes. They expect EVERYTHING from you to be a freebee at that point...

If I had the budget, maybe... But now...?

No. The only thing they will get free from me is a Flyer to the live show! lol

Giving away something for free to get attention and bring in
more sales is what promotion is all about. Thast's what AM/FM
Radio is. That's why I get bombarded with free samples when I
go to the grocery store and why Starbucks is giving out free
iTunes downloads when you buy a coffee.

You just have to be smart about it.

Listen what a few of us here at CD Baby have to say about
Radiohead's "free" album on this weeks episode of the CD Baby
    Podcast!

I am no longer pushing my cd to retail stores. I make them at my home office, I initially made 500. Sold those and made another 1000 after that. I sell them at my shows, festivals, speaking engagements. I am beginning to get some downloads and I want to focus on that. How does the StarBucks thing work? How would you do that with other businesses? (Bookstores, etc.)

I have decided to stop writing music.
    What's the point!
