Excerpt from iTunes newletter
"With iTunes Plus, you can get our highest-quality audio with no
restrictions for personal use. iTunes Plus songs are available at
$1.29 per song, music videos are still $1.99, and albums are
generally available at the same price as DRM-protected versions
of the albums.
And best of all, you can upgrade all the eligible music you've
previously purchased from iTunes to iTunes Plus for just $.30
per song, $.60 per music video, and 30% of an album price. New
additions to iTunes Plus music are added to iTunes all the time,
so check back often to find new music available for upgrading."

Will CD Baby get some extra cash with the upgrades?

Someone just asked me if we will be selling our stuff this way...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but at the moment at least iTunes Plus is
only filled with EMI music. Still, as Steve Jobs (I think I'm right in
saying) has expressed a desire to have every piece of recorded
music ever made on iTunes (impossible, I'm sure, but I admire him
for it), you would have thought CD Baby artists would be worth
adding to the iTunes Plus catalogue right now. Guess we'll hear as
and when this looks like happening but that we're down the
pecking order a little. I'm presuming it won't just happen
automatically anyway as CD Baby will have to re-submit all our
tracks first - ?

Apple emailed us the same day the announcement was made (a few months back) saying they wanted the entire CD Baby catalog re-delivered as lossless master files, so they could be included in the DRM-free higher-quality tracks.
But, since it's over 50 terabytes (over 5000 gigs) of audio to redeliver, it's taking a while.

Thanks, Derek.
This will have to be a good move for the long run; if you think about it, we may not be too far from Apple selling the complete Apple Lossless .m4a files which would be the ultimate full quality for the customer that they could choose to convert down to a smaller file (or choose not to...).
Since the .m4a lossless version is almost half the file size of a .WAV, yet equal in sound quality, it will be a nice compromise by the time downloading speeds are higher. (For example you might have read about technology that will give digital delivery of a MOVIE in one second http://www.itwire.com.au/content/view/10809/53/ )

My Question:
What format will the lossless master files be in?
I'm thinking either .WAV, FLAC or more likely and Apple PC audio format.

My Comment:
Yes, that would take a while, especially if you are converting ALL files to something huge like .WAV format!

derek may deliver lossless (for conversion), but the apple DRM-free purchase format is 256kbps .AAC

Dr. Chop Chop,
Quote:
"The apple DRM-free purchase format is 256kbps .AAC"
Ok, I figured it might be an .AAC Apple format, but I didn't know at what bit rate. 256 kbps is probably almost "CD perfect", at least compared to most MP3 files in the range of 128 - 192 kbps.
Though NOT exactly lossless like .WAV or FLAC, that's still pretty good all things considered including (probably) a very reasonable file size compared to .WAV and even FLAC formats.
Thanks,
Michael

Apple is aiming to get their (and therefore our/your) entire catalog DRM-free. It would be unwise in this day-and-age to insist on DRM, when most places are dropping it.

I cannot wait until all music is DRM-Free! There is a point where ease of use trumps free, and I think having DRM-free music will actually help people buy more music. Thanks for working so hard for all of us Derek!

I, for one, fully support and look forward to seeing my music DRM
free and higher bit rate on the iTunes Store. Keep up the good
work Derek and the gang!

Is there a better timeline for when this is going to happen yet? It's
been a long time since the announcement and I'm dying to have my
music available this way - and now also as ringtones for iPhones.
I hope it's very soon. I have a lot of very unahppy tech-crazed
fans.

This is a really exciting development. iTunes is such a
convenient way to buy music but I think alot of potential music-
buyers are put off because of the DRM. I think when the CD Baby
catalogue is offered in 256kbps DRM-free formats it will really
help drive sales. And I can understand why it's taking a while -
must be a huge job re-encoding everything. Thanks Derek, keep
up the good work.

Dear Friends,
I'm not sure where to post this.
Regarding iTunes and digital, is the distribution global or only U.S. based?
A Japanese label I am working with wants 50% of iTunes Japan royalties, i'm trying to figure out how to alot that to them.
Many thanks and regards.

CD Baby actually reports iTunes Japan sales separately. So if you need to cut someone else in on those sales the totals should all be clearly displayed in your member account's DIGITAL section.
