Legendary guitarist Dick Dale provides some free advice to up-and-coming artists in this video interview.
In a nutshell, Dale says, "Don't sign with a label, they'll get every penny, screw you over and you won't see anything -- in fact, if you make them $14,000,000, you'll end up owing them $2,000,000 more."
He advises artists to go indie, make their own CDs, sell them out of the trunks of their cars, stop trying to make the cover of Rolling Stone, be a business person instead.

Dick Dale speaks the truth! If you want to control your music you don't need a middleman (record company). Form your own record company and record and produce your own songs. Record Labels are what I call the maggots of this industry controlling everything including copyrights in some situations. They tell you what you must record! Be your own boss! The internet is the ticket to true independance! Use it! Sell them out of the trunk of your car, Horace Silver did! Get your music out to the world by anymeans necessary. Don't get hooked with phony record advances, perks, fancy cars, clothes! If it sounds too good to be true it probably is a lie.
