| CD Baby + Snocap/MySpace : an initial heads-up, with details later |
|

 |
UPDATE : please see http://cdbaby.org/snocap
Some people have been asking, so I just wanted to let everyone know:
Snocap (http://snocap.com/), the company that makes the "MyStore" on MySpace.com, is one of our partner companies as part of CD Baby Digital Distribution.
After 18 months(!) of contract negotiation, we got you an incredible deal as a "Premiere Snocap Partner", which means:
#1 - You'll be paid MORE for your Snocap sales through CD Baby than if you were to go through Snocap directly. (about 3 cents more per-track, but also no need for their annual fee)
#2 - You won't have to send your music to two different places. We can be a GREAT distributor for you, and do it ALL for you here.
#3 - As a "Premiere Snocap Partner", CD Baby can offer lots of PROMO opportunities, including:
- a featured "CD Baby Artist of the Week" on MySpace
- a chance to become the "Snocap Featured Download" on the Music Home Page of MySpace
- Top Seller charts for CD Baby on snocap.com and the Snocap MySpace page
... and more to come.
Soon you'll be able to personalize your Snocap store (that appears on your MySpace page if you have one), and do everything from inside your CD Baby Members Login Area, including adding new tracks, changing prices, and everything else.
They are still importing our audio files, and will be ready in a few weeks. As soon as that's done, we will send you your unique codes for linking your Snocap store, and have more details on how to make changes.
No need to reply with questions, because we'll have all the answers for you in a few weeks when your codes are here.
Until then, please just accept this as a "heads-up" to let you know things are in progress.
--
Derek Sivers, president, CD Baby, HostBaby
P.S. If you have already signed up with Snocap directly, and are having trouble due to duplicate accounts, let us know what you would like to do.

3 weeks of not being able to sell tracks via Snocap. No help from Snocap, several e-mails to & from CD Baby with "it will be resolved soon". Still, our tracks are disputed! Great! Awesome!
What a horrible feeling not being allowed to sell your own music online via Snocap. I just wish there was some real action to resolve these situations.

|
 |
 |
|

So do I, Justin. We've been bugging Snocap daily to send us their codes, and we're still waiting. They keep telling us 'any day now'.

So i opened a snocap account and uploaded my music to the snocap and then they said that my music is in dispute BUT THEN I DO A SEARCH OF MY OWN ALBUM (JUSTIN ROSS SEVENTYFIVE ) AND THERE ARE ALREADY TWO STORES SELLING MY MUSIC. what the hell is that all about is it my CDbABY account selling my cd twice or what . Please let me know soon thank you for your time. Justin R. Woolard

The new deal is on the Internet. Have you MP3 store on your MySpace page and this great creation comes from the same company that handle MySpace.
Independant musician, a new world is open to you!
Come on guys!
Aren't you tired of those "GREAT DEALS".
We pay for the production of our products, the art cover, we work for months on the tracks, we take a loan to produce it.
The only deal we can have is:
A line of code to have a "store" - take a look at it, it's really sad - on MySpace (WOW! That's the deal of the century) and they get 40% of your sales for that?
In no other business - we are a business - you will see that!
But we suffer of the lack of recognition. Being on a little computer screen makes us thrill!
ow... you want to sell your music? you will also have to do the promotion.
Because for 40% they do... nothing. No promotion in magazine or radio... nothing to sell YOUR music. Absolutly nothing.
You work for them to make money and the presentation of their store is a real crap... even doesn't look like a CD baby (outdated) page.
Come on and wake up!
I made my MP3 store on my website (PhilippeBertaud.com) and can give you all the tricks and code FOR FREE.
Let's stopped to be doomed by those guys.
We are independant right? So, let us be.
We probably are the only industry were we PAY to try to sell our stuffs.
40%... no promotion (oh, you can be the artist of the month on their site... what a great deal!!! or featured artist on MySpace... for 40% of your income.
Deduct what you had to pay plus your work out of the 60% they will let you... you will stay with a lot of hope and a day job to survive... finance the next CD... and help them to make money.
You want codes for you site? I will give you them all. Let's boycott the crap and be real indies.

Dear Philippe,
Your web site is beautiful and I truly understand your passion about independent music being independent all the way.
But I look at it a little differently;
Since about 2003 - 2004 when CDbaby first got independent artists' work up onto iTunes, for the first time, in my opinion, independent artists got on the same playing field as Major Label acts. These stores like iTunes (and maybe SnoCap too, we'll see...) are, from my perception like huge waves of distribution for anyone whether major label or independent.
It would be like if you invented a grocery store product, had your own little grocery store in the middle of the woods (this is my analogy for our web sites) and chose to only sell your new product from the little grocery store. You would make 100% of the profit of your product, but the rest of the world would not find out about it as easily as if you had major grocery stores (that's my analogy for iTunes, Snocap, etc...) from all over the world duplicating the sales of your product and taking 40% of the earnings.
Now who would sell more songs, gain more name recognition, and earn more, - the grocer who sold their product only through his/her own store, or the grocer who sold that same product through stores all over the world?
And the best part is musicians can even do both :-) And I don't feel like I'm saying anything new to you, Philippe, because I noticed how nicely you laid out iTunes links right next to your Paypal mp3 download links. Very cool indeed.

I don't see a place to sign up for snocap on my myspace musician's page so emailed them with questions..got the brush off shuffle from the myspace/snocap guy then from snocap.com. told me to direct my questions to cdbaby from now on unless i wanted to sign up directly...sheesh. I'm just wanting to know how where to sign up from myspace. should i just wait?! The whole deal sounds pretty cool to me.

I also tried to sign up for the myspace/snocap thing a while back but saw no place to sign up. Went to snocap and couldn't register because we have a uk address and there was option for it.

I manage band profiles on MySpace for myself and two other bands. One of the other bands has a link on their home page to create a MySpace Music Store. My own profile and the other one do not have this link. Is it not available to all artists on MySpace?

 |

This is only a guess, but I would think that snocap has to somehow be notified of what our myspace URL is, or easier, make these special links available to ALL musician myspace accounts.
In my myspace admin I found it within the link called 'Account Settings'.
I hope this is helpful.

Hi, I assked this in an e-mail and I got a "wait and see" kind of answer, which is okay, but I was working on a schedule of releasing a few song on SnoCap for a few potential managers to hear as well as hopefully potential customers. So I ask again, I apologize if this has already been addressed.
I have one CD on CDBaby, and I love it. I would like to put individual songs now and then on SnoCap myself (I do topical material that has an audience for a limited time, and they will not be on a regular CD...). Is it okay to put songs on SnoCap that have not been, and will not be, submitted to CDBaby. I will be submitting my next full CD to CDBaby, and I just want to avoid potential confusion....thanks!

I'm a fan and friend of the artist Happy Rhodes and I maintain several web pages for her. I was talking to her about Snocap and she said she had gotten an email about this from CD Baby so I came here to read about it. Happy has 10 albums but for now only one is being sold through CD Baby. The others are a matter of finances, but she hopes to add more at some point. However, she has a few album that can't be sold through CD Baby because they're out of print and she doesn't have enough copies to send. At some point in the future she'll press more copies but again, that's a matter of finances. New fans still want to hear the songs on those albums, so I'm wondering if those songs can be added to Snocap, or if she would have to have two Snocap accounts, one going through CD Baby and the album she has here, and another for her out of print albums. Does anyone know how that might work?
Btw Dan, I maintain Happy's MySpace account (actually there are two) and there's no link in her Home section to sign up for Snocap either. I don't know why.

i signed up for SNOCAP and it will not let me sell my songs since it is showing that CDBaby has the 'recording rights' and my tracks show as disputed! I thought CDBaby was not an exclusive distributor...I understand that SNOCAP & CDBaby are in negotiations but I do not dig that CDBaby is claiming exclusive rights to distribute our music. I have written SNOCAP and they finally told me that you guys are working on it and to contact CDBaby for an answer...what's going on?

How about giving a response to this issue, Derek? If this is true, it could be a BIG issue for CD Baby artists.

Dan - please email cdbaby@cdbaby.com. We emailed everyone about this a few weeks ago, and are waiting for Snocap to resolve it.
If you email us with your info, (name of your album, etc), we can make a faster fix by hand for you, if you need.

I am having this same issue. I dont mind going thru cdbaby for it. I just wonder...if I want to add a live track from the show last night....can I still do that if my snocap is thru cdbaby? or will i have to add it as a whole new album?

Same issue here...just holding off on having CDBaby administer my
Snocap account since I like being able to post songs for sale that
aren't on physical CDs. In the meantime, all my song rights are
being disputed as well. Would love to have the final word on selling
non-album tracks on Snocap through CDBaby so we can continue
to rock on!
Otherwise, just amazing Derek....

Oh yes, one other suggestion if it's possible: you know how Snocap
has the songs just listed all a la carte (we can put them in whatever
order we want though), and there's only the one image for the
store? What are the possibilities of being able to group songs
together by "album" if desired, with each album showing its own
artwork, and give the listener the choice of buying single songs OR
the album as a whole (kind of like iTunes)? All while still being able
to sell non-album tracks, of course. :-) Too much to ask?

Teahead - That'd have to be up to Snocap. It's not a feature I've heard them mention as even on the horizon, though, so if you're holding your breath, please resume breathing now. :-)

Hi Derek,
Thanks for working this out with snocap.
Sunblossom Records (our indie company) has additional single tracks by dancing Light that we want to sell off our myspace page. These songs have not been released on any of the full-length CDs we sell through CDBaby.
Should we contract directly with snocap or go through CDBaby to snocap? We realize the only tracks you can provide to snocap are the ones we've provided to you.
Thanks for helping us understand this aspect of the snocap/cdbaby alliance.

It didn't occur to me until now that potential sales could be that
easy. I get more hits to myspace than my other marketing sites
and just started thinking about making the myspace page my
major selling point since I don't have the time or resources to do
much with my own domain. That's freakin' awesome news!
(even though I noticed it a month later.) Good luck getting that
all worked out.

Has anyone using Snocap tried implementing this new feature they
just added for grouping albums? Can't get it to work on my Mac
using Safari or Netscape...don't have Firefox. Hhmmm...I think I will
now blindly trust CDBaby to manage this account for me, and hope
it will resolve that I can upload and sell non-album tracks through
them....
