Ways to make extra money from the van?
posted by Josh Dodes on Tuesday March 14 2006 @ 08:37AM PST
Need your feedback! Here's a kind of a crazy question that, if people have good answers, might benefit a lot of musicians: can anyone think of a way for a touring musician to make extra money while literally on the road?

I'm a full-time sideman with a laptop and good computer/typing skills, and with lots of long drives in the back of the van (or in a hotel room), I'm trying to think if there's anything I can do with some of my down time to make a couple hundred extra bucks a week.

I'm thinking stuff like transcription, freelance word processing, etc., but I'm wide open to ANY ideas anyone has.

(If I had to choose, I'd prefer something steady to something lucrative, but I'd love to hear any serious ideas at all.)

Thanks a lot, and hope this ends up helping other touring musicians!

    Have laptop, will... something?

    Josh

Well, sure. And who isn't immediately drawn to a merch table selling CDs, t-shirts, and kidneys? (Plus, this is a great solution for late-night snacks in towns where everything's closed.)

Possibly transcription work. Also consider writing articles. And even try working for courier services if you are headed to and from big cities.

There's always web design. It requires no overhead beyond advertising and can bring in hundreds of dollars per site contract. You can do all the design and testing on your own laptop and upload from any Starbucks with a hot spot.

Another option would be to podcast from the road. Host a half-hour show with live recordings, tour stories, and maybe some interviews with interesting people you meet on tour. Get enough listeners and you can start appealing to advertisers. More information about podcasting can be found at http://www.podshow.com

A great way to make money while touring and get food and other benefits is to become a "mystery shopper" or a "secret shopper."

Basically you sign up with the different companies, and take on jobs where you go. You do have to be detailed and be able to write up good reports, but you will get free food, free gas, and make some good money. I used to do this on the side.

Here are some resources for you. Good luck! It's not that hard, but again, you must be reliable and detailed.

By the way, NEVER pay to be a mystery shopper ever. You don't have to pay a fee, or sign up and pay a one time anything. It's free for legitimate companies. See resources below. Blessings. Jaci Rae

And by the way, you can make some serious bucks. I used to make 3-5 grand for 8 days of 18 hours days of course, but I also got all the perks. It isn't easy work, but I was very organzied and very good at what I did with companies seeking me out. Good luck! Blessings. Jaci

Ever thought of advertising on the sides of your van? Sell the space!

    Good luck!

What would the sales pitch be if you tried to sell advertising spots on the side of your van?

In another thread somewhere on this forum Derek was saying how he hates advertising, and other people were posting about how advertising never works except for big ticket items.

Advertising seems like a way to make money, but how do you sell it when you don't have data and figures supporting your sales pitch? How do you convince people their money will earn a return on investment for the buyer? Do ad buyers buy without all that fancy supporting data?

Advertising is everywhere, and for every ad you see you know someone bought the damned thing.

Advertising on vehicles gives you the best bang for your buck, and a well-designed ad can go a long way. I'm in the business, and I hear from satisfied clients every day about how both their revenues and interest in their companies increased after having their vehicles professionally "wrapped." And there are many companies out there who will pay you very well to put their advertising on your vehicle.

I'm a little wary about travelling in a marked up vehicle. It's a lot
of attention on the road and when park (which is the point) but
you put a few things on the line. First of all, equipment needs to
be extra secure cuz more people will try to look inside or will
notice you loading and unloading. Second, be prepared to be
stopped by cops. The more attention you have on you while on
the road, the more they'll notice speeding, a little swerve,
something dragging, or broken, or whatever... I can see how
placing an ad on your car would be a good way to make money,
but it's a bit dangerous and can cost you money too...

    Tarun,
Take a look at some of the tour busses we wrapped for album releases and promotions. Click the "vehicles" link at the site and check out the vans and busses.

Regarding the extra attention given to wrapped vehicles: that's the whole point. Wrapping vehicles is fairly common here in south Florida and I have never heard of any of my clients being hassled by law enforcement, but you do need to be careful about leaving your equipment in an unsecured vehicle, obviously. I think just about every touring musician has been ripped off at one time or another. Be careful out there!
