    Derek,

Are those numbers per week, or total since the start of the digital download agreements between CDBaby and the various companies?

by Derek at CD Baby on Thursday February 09 2006 @ 11:19AM PST [ reply | parent ]
    that's total, ever

I'm not surprised that the iTunes numbers are so good, but I would have guessed that the numbers for Weed and some of the others would have been much higher. But I would have guessed wrong I guess.

But then again, it may take a while for the money to go from Point A to CD Baby.

For example, I purchased my own song off of mp3tunes a while back and it took right at 2 months for me to get paid for that transaction. I was curious to see how long it would take, but that was when mp3tunes was brand new too.

I'm "all-in" when it comes to CD Baby, especially the digital distribution part.

Derek - you rock. And if you open a store/warehouse in Central Texas, I'll be here to help you!

Derek, I mean no disrespect to CD Baby....I am very impressed w/ all the work this company has provided....but would you be able to shed some light on the delays w/ITUNES, NAPSTER, SONY, etc...not requesting new music quickly from CD Baby. I'm very familiar w/ the CDB hardrive process....but is there anyway, based on the number above, you can use this leverage to make them add CDB music NOW or more quickly!!! Myself and probably others too, have waited 2 months and counting, to have music added to the big-leagues of D.D. (ITunes, napster etc...). Thanks, your feedback would be most appreciated.

Thank you Derek - I imagine many of us were wondering how the sales break-down. I have received more from the various itunes than anything else - I hope our new CD "Railroads, Hoboes, And Cowboys" get picked up by itunes quickly! Interestingly, on some sites where I can 'sort of' check on sales/movement (mp3tunes & buymusic & yahoo - and there SEEM to be sales) - I haven't received a penny (or part of a penny) yet. I wonder what other artists are experiencing? Anyway - Thanks Once Again, Derek. I've never met you, but you are one of my Best Friends!

I've checked out Weed, and their site shows several downloads for my music( more than 100 total) and i havent recieved any money from their sales ever. I first seen sales quite a few months ago. Is there a reason for no payment from them?

    by Rex on Sunday February 12 2006 @ 09:08PM PST [ reply | parent ]
I've had my Weed files downloaded on various sites that total over 300 and those are just the ones that I can track. But just because someone downloads a Weed file does not necessarily mean that they'll buy it. They have to buy it for you to get paid and IF they bought it, I would assume it could take a couple of months for it to get to CD Baby and then to you. Just my thoughts. Anyone know?

    by Rosanne Simunovic on Monday February 13 2006 @ 09:12AM PST [ reply | parent ]
I have had the identical problem with WEED. Thousands of downloads, no money. I elected to leave the program months ago, but it is hard to remove the songs once they are online.

I e-mailed Derek and I hop he is rectifying the problem.

by Derek at CD Baby on Monday February 13 2006 @ 09:20AM PST [ reply | parent ]
    > it is hard to remove the songs once they are online

You're right. That's exactly why we made Weed a separate opt-in company.

There was a HUGE warning before you opted-in for Weed saying, "Once your files are in Weed format for distribution, we CAN'T COMPLETELY REMOVE YOUR FILES from being distributed on the Internet. Upon termination for any reason, you acknowledge that your formatted Recordings may continue to be distributed."

    by Rosanne Simunovic on Monday February 13 2006 @ 11:47AM PST [ reply | parent ]
I know. I made a big Booboo by attaching myself to WEED. Frustrating, but, I WAS warned.

    Thanks Derek.

P.S. Any news why their totals are not adding up to your report?

by Derek at CD Baby on Monday February 13 2006 @ 06:33PM PST [ reply | parent ]
I don't think Weed is a boo-boo. I think Weed is a great idea, and maybe it will take off huge some day.

    > Any news why their totals are not adding up to your report?

Hm? They are. They pay promptly every month. They're very legit and trustworthy.

As someone else, above, described : just because someone downloaded your file in Weed doesn't mean they bought it. Buying a file is a second decision that happens after someone has listened to it three times.

Derek, your openess is such a blast.
Looks like the old 80/20 rule is 90/20 here.. thats very interesting.

by Derek at CD Baby on Monday February 13 2006 @ 06:33PM PST [ reply | parent ]
    90/20? Love it. 110% :-)

    by Rosanne Simunovic on Monday February 13 2006 @ 06:39PM PST [ reply | parent ]
    Derek:

Jen e-mailed me and I understand now. So, basically, they can download it, listen to it three times and then they must purchase it, correct? That's the impression I got.

Can you explain why this is as good as a listener purchasing our digital music from Yahoo or MSN, for example?

I must confess, I am a confused being here.

by Derek at CD Baby on Monday February 13 2006 @ 08:18PM PST [ reply | parent ]
    re: Weed:

    > they can download it, listen to it three times and then they must purchase it, correct?

Yes. Weed's website has more info : http://www.weedshare.com/

    > Can you explain why this is as good as a listener purchasing our digital music from Yahoo or MSN, for example?

No. It's just a different way of doing things. There's a lot going on in digital music right now. People trying all kinds of new ideas.

    by Rex on Monday February 13 2006 @ 08:27PM PST [ reply | parent ]
Once someone buys a Weed file, it's yours forever and ever (on that computer) and you can burn it to CD, etc. If you don't buy a Weed file, you can't burn it, but you can listen to it 3 times for free, then it won't let you listen to it anymore (on that computer).

BUT there IS a way around it where someone can download a Weed file, listen to it 3 times for free and then go through a step or 2 and you get another 3 free listens. But you still can't burn it, etc.

So if you REALLY like a song in Weed format but REALLY don't want to buy it (cheapskate?), then there is a way to keep listening.

    Hi Derek,
Thanks for giving us the break down so far.
Regarding WEED, it seems like one has to understand the WEED community and sites and be somewhat proactive in promoting those sites. I think I and many others have still not caught on, or understand how or where to promote it on our own so far.

There is a slight error on the digital download teaser page:

"It's Exclusive - just like in the physical world, there can't be more than one distributor bringing the same music to the same store."

In the physical world, it's absolutely the opposite. When I owned a record store in the '80s on 75th street in Downers Grove, we bought the same music into our store from four distributers, Bassin, Abbey Road, Philadelphia One-Stop and one more I forget. If we were out of a Metallica CD we would order a restock from the distributor with the best price and fill for that week.

Maybe you can come up with a better analogy or...

by Derek at CD Baby on Tuesday February 28 2006 @ 01:42PM PST [ reply | parent ]
    I can't. Can you?

    by Dave H. on Tuesday February 28 2006 @ 02:11PM PST [ reply | parent ]
    Yes, how about:

"It's Exclusive - Our hands our tied, it has to be this way. Providers of digital downloads to consumers are forcing our hands on this one."

by Derek at CD Baby on Tuesday February 28 2006 @ 04:10PM PST [ reply | parent ]
Nah. Not into the whole bondage scene, with all that tying of hands and forcing into uncomfortable positions.

I think the physical-distributor metaphor is close-enough and explains the reasons behind it. Websites (whether iTunes, Amazon, CD Baby, etc) don't want to have duplicates : the exact same album listed multiple times on their site. It creates confusion, and is flagged as a database error.

So if they remove the duplication and now there is only one copy of this album being sold, even though three different distributors sent that exact same album, then how would iTunes know who to pay?

They wouldn't. They pull it from ALL distribution and call the lawyers to go fight it out until one distributor decides that they have THE exclusive right to receive payments from iTunes when that album sells.

    That's the facts, Jacks.

    by Dave on Tuesday February 28 2006 @ 05:00PM PST [ reply | parent ]
Oh, I thought that's the same thing my rewritten statement conveyed, but in shorthand.

Maybe a button with John Cleese doing his best Basil Fawlty, "Can't be helped - Sorryyyyy!"

    by Jamiel on Wednesday March 01 2006 @ 08:33PM PST [ reply | parent ]
Yo Derek. Is the digital ditribution pay and cd distibution pay the same check and turn around period, or is the d.d money totaly diffrent? Seeing how these d.d sites like weed are slow to pay do this pose a future problem for money. Or will it be better to just roll with cdbaby only seeing as though nobody has cmplained about cdbaby and its way?

by Derek at CD Baby on Wednesday March 01 2006 @ 09:25PM PST [ reply | parent ]
Jamiel - almost all of these companies pay every month. Then we add it on to your check as soon as we receive it. Then we pay every Monday night, like always.

So - it's all on the same turnaround period.

Getting back to weed. I would think that if you have enough people listening to one of your songs. Say 2000 listens which shows on the weedtracks web site .It would look quite impressive ,and I believe more people would listen to that song even more and want to buy it. Not a garintee, but I would want to check it out for myself, And 2000 listens is good exsposuer its, good networking.walter goulet

by Derek at CD Baby on Tuesday March 14 2006 @ 02:24PM PST [ reply | parent ]
I don't know who you are, but until now, Emusic has not been able to accept any albums with cover songs. If your album had even one cover song on it, they couldn't take it. That's finally changing.

    by da on Tuesday March 14 2006 @ 05:30PM PST [ reply | parent ]
yep that would be the reason...there's a cover song on the project. Glad to hear the restriction is being lifted.

I just recieved my first pay out and am a little concerned that is was only $.09 for 3-5 downloads.... $.040 - $.020 - $.010 show on the pay out for MusicNet. Can anyone explain this to me? I was expecting $.40-$.60 per song....

Maybe it's obvious, but does the word 'DEAD' in the DD tables mean the company is closed, or just that they aren't affiliated with CDBaby anymore?

And, in either case, what happens to all the IP they collected during the affiliation?

Not paranoid, just curious. On one of DDelivery reports "MP3-Extension - DEAD" but I when I click the link attached to their listing in the affiliates detail page, it takes me to NUME...sorry if this has been answered somewhere else :-)

duh on me. The MP3-Extension does say dead and the link is offline, but my correctly referenced concern is the supposedly 'DEAD' Wrap Factory on the Digital Delivery report - when their link is online and yet takes me to NUME (which we're already with) but now I'm wondering how Wrap Factory is 'dead' if I can still go there and the NUME widget still function where we've placed it...maybe I should just go to bed...I'm web weary...
