CD Baby teams with Best Buy
posted by Derek at CD Baby on Wednesday November 09 2005 @ 06:28AM PST
News from Inside We just got a lot more exposure for your music.

All albums on CD Baby are now also available through BestBuy.com - one of the largest retailers in America.

Click this link for an example:
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=pcmcat68000050003&type=category

THE "BEHIND THE SCENES" INFO FOR YOU AS AN ARTIST/LABEL:

Since their database wasn't ready to add 100,000 new items to their website yet, they put a CD Baby SEARCH/BROWSE on the bestbuy.com website.

When people are browsing or searching music on BestBuy.com, they are directed to that link, above. Anyone searching from that link will actually be searching the live cdbaby.com. The look will be "co-branded" to look like BestBuy.com a bit, but it's still CD Baby.

Money-wise, nothing changes. It will be a normal CD Baby sale. The customer will complete their order on cdbaby.com. We pay Best Buy something out of OUR cut, not yours. The only downside is that we are not allowed to show you the customer's name or info when the sale came through BestBuy.com - it will show in your sales history as "Best Buy Customer" - an anonymous sale.

If someone goes in-person to one of the Best Buy stores and asks for your album, the clerks (are supposed to) search the BestBuy.com website, and customers can use an in-store kiosk to buy your album through this link to CD Baby. (Not at the cash register, but through the website, mail-order, like any other cdbaby.com purchase.)

If you feel like putting a link on your site, saying your music is available on BestBuy.com, just to show you're there, then the link to use would just be this:
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=pcmcat68000050003&type=category

CD Baby Brings More Than 100,000 Albums of Independent Music to BestBuy.com

MINNEAPOLIS, Nov. 8, 2005 - Best Buy is launching an independent music catalog at BestBuy.com that will give shoppers access to the largest online library of independent music. Through an alliance
with CD Baby, Best Buy customers can access and purchase more than 100,000 hard-to-find albums sold direct from the artist.

CD Baby handles online sales and distribution for independent artists and labels. More than 75,000 artists sell their music through CD Baby, making it the largest seller of independent music on the Web.

"Best Buy believes the future of music depends on consumers exploring new music and connecting with new artists," said Gary Arnold, senior vice president of entertainment for Best Buy. "As the link between the artist and the consumer, Best Buy is in a unique position to help generate excitement by exposing people to talented independent artists. It's a responsibility we take seriously, and that's why this agreement with CD Baby is so important."

The alliance with CD Baby is part of Best Buy's overall commitment to provide consumers with as many entertainment choices as possible. Best Buy stocks a deep catalog of music that goes well beyond simply carrying new releases. Offering the CD Baby catalog online will provide an even more diverse selection of music to Best Buy customers.

"Best Buy selling deep catalog directly from independent musicians like this is the beginning of a 'long tail' revolution," said Derek Sivers, founder of CD Baby. "This will highlight the most amazing musicians in all genres of music, that are bypassing the record labels to sell directly from musician to fan."

The CD Baby alliance will be featured on front page of the music section on BestBuy.com. A link will take customers to a searchable library of independent and unsigned artists. Consumers can browse by style of music, check out the top selling albums on the site, and can even search by location to discover talent from their part of the country.

Important: only albums in our Digital Distribution program will be in the BestBuy search results

Sorry I forgot to mention that in the initial release.

That was at the request of BestBuy, for legal reasons : the additional indemnity clause that is in our digital distribution agreement.

How do we become a part of the digital distribution program?

    AND

My band already has distribution through Best Buy as a result of Artist 1 Stop, will this affect that?

    Thanks!

    >> How do we become a part of the digital distribution program?

Just log in to your account, here:
    http://members.cdbaby.com/

Once in, click [DIGITAL], up top.

That will give you a quick overview, then lead you through the signup. It's just a matter of typing your full legal name as a "digital signature" in the box, if you want to do it.

Awesome as usual Derek! Glad you're a benevolent force on the music scene!

The thing with my product: Funk Violin Live - NYC is that it's a DVD. I don't think it can participate in the digital downloads program. What do I do to get it on the Best Buy listings? Will Filmbaby do something similar for DVD's?

If one's starting point is http://www.bestbuy.com how would one end up at http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=pcmcat68000050003&type=category

Click by click, as a consumer without access to the url link you've sent us, can you get me from the BestBuy home page to the CDBaby Search/Browse button?

    Thanks.

#1 - click MUSIC on the far left

#2 - click INDEPENDENT MUSIC banner on the far-right

As you can see in my other posts, this is not optimal and I never said it was. It's a transition step to at least start to make it easier to find. For a huge company like that, this little step is actually a big step. It took 8 persistent months of hard work and corporate politics to get it through.

Holy cow! Currently I'm not in the digital category, but now my name & cd are no longer available in the *regular* cdbaby.com search engine! so... I understand that non-digital entries are dropped from Best Buy's search engine, but shouldn't they remain in cdbaby's?

    thanks,

So "Best Buy" is only selling full tangable CD's --- They are'nt involved in "Digital Downloads"-- Is this correct??? Rockland

BestBuy.com just points to CDBaby.com - they do nothing - they sell nothing - they just point people here.

CD Baby does not sell downloads. Only CDs.

Derek - thanks so much! I was able to find my band, Cuir Bleu, through the Best Buy site. It was a bit awkward, I'll admit - if I hadn't read this, I wouldn't have known to look for the "Independent Music" icon on the right. I can't wait for the integrated version!

    Nice! Thanks Derek,

For the next pass, can you get the Best Buy folks to tie their
search to yours in the event of no direct matches. Their main
page can't find CDBaby artists. Customers have to select either
'advanced search' or 'see all music' then they have to notice the
seperate Independent Music by CD Baby llink on the side of the
page. We'll all do better if they can integrate the searches so we
show up when their customers search the general store. Thx.

by Derek at CD Baby on Wednesday November 09 2005 @ 09:34AM PST [ reply | parent ]
Yes - that is the next pass. Their tech team said it would take longer, so this is it for now, and that will happen after the new year supposedly.

In a world full of money hungry people hoping to feed on indie artists, YOU are always watching our back, alerting us to evil and providing us with good venues to sell our music!

This is really cool. But just wondering how hard is it going to be to actually make sales?. People have to look you up. They are not just going to come and search you out. Right? I think it would be really good if you could search for song titles and then the search would come up with artist matches to the songs. Just a thought.

after someone visits cdbaby thru bestbuy seems that non-digital

The co-branding cookie lasts for a few hours. (The little thing that remembers that this customer came from bestbuy.com and makes CD Baby look like Best Buy.)

That was part of a requirement of doing the deal with BestBuy - for obvious reasons : if someone bookmarks a page to come back later, it still needs to look like the BestBuy shopping experience they started.

    by on Wednesday November 09 2005 @ 04:03PM PST [ reply | parent ]
which cookie is that? the cdbaby cookie expires in a year. one of

    expire at all.

by Derek at CD Baby on Wednesday November 09 2005 @ 04:55PM PST [ reply | parent ]
It's a session-cookie, which isn't supposed to be a real long-lasting cookie. Check back tomorrow on cdbaby.com WITHOUT going to bestbuy.com inbetween. Let me know if it's still co-branded.

    by david on Wednesday November 09 2005 @ 04:33PM PST [ reply | parent ]
how about providing a special link/variable that will always guarantee that the Best Buy co brand shows up...this way artiss can put a "Best Buy" deep link to their cds from their own personal websites?

by Derek at CD Baby on Wednesday November 09 2005 @ 04:56PM PST [ reply | parent ]
No - that would be unwise for me, because it would take away half of my income. It would be unwise for you, because it would mean you'd never know who was buying from that link, since BestBuy's privacy policy forbids us from sharing customer data with you.

    Derek,

The news is good and Best Buy is a great catch. My
only concern is that online customers searching Best
Buy would really have to be on a mission to find CD
Baby. The link is hidden under layers of pages and
once you find it, it's still tiny. It would be much more
beneficial if Best Buy was set-up like Tower where
general searches will yield any artist both major and
indie. Not a criticism of your hard work, just a concern.

Of course! That's what we were shooting for (by "we" I mean BOTH us and them) - but their tech-team couldn't make it happen yet - so we started with this.

After Christmas they're going to try again to get our entire catalog showing in their store.

If the album is out of stock, will the site direct the person
    to some digital download sites...

speaking of which, I wish you would consider a
mechanism to work with our manufacturer, swiftcd.com .
They ship within two days and you would not need to
stock any inventory. Just pass the orders along.

If we get slammed with orders, this was the only way I

if your name is John Smith? Shouldn't your

    Derek,

The Best Buy deal is great. I also read your Australian iTunes
interview which was interesting and resourceful. And now I read
on this thread that CD baby via Liquid Audio will get into Wal
Mart next....amazing how quickly things have come together
with music intellectual property. Truly progressive and important
things happening. And this summer there was the Grokster
supreme court ruling against file sharing, and now Grokster’s
    going legit....

Any chance CD baby’s catalog could ending up on Grokster as
    well?

    Mega Prop’s Derek!

Where did you go to school? You are probably the smartest Marketing guy I know! Thanks a ton!

Question, I understand Best Buy requiring the Digi Distribution, but 2 of my CDs I own most of the songs, the 3rd is all cover tunes so I would be required to send royalty checks via certified mail every month and that would cost more than the $.61 I make wouldn't it, so why should I Digi the 3rd CD? -Gary Brunotte

    by Steve Sevek on Wednesday November 16 2005 @ 06:54AM PST [ reply | parent ]
I guess you're afraid that there won't be enough digital sales to cover your cost of reporting sales every month to the publisers [postage, etc]

I suggest contacting the publishers and letting them know that you are considering making your album available as a DPD release and would like to know if they would agree to reporting once every quarter instead of monthly. In fact, I requested compulsory licenses for digital distribution of an album and so far the publishers have agreed to reporting every quarter and not monthly and they don't require a certified annual statement certified by a CPA.

Worse case scenario - if it doesn't work out you can always withdraw the album from digital distribution but personally, I would give it at least a 6 month commitment before doing that. Nothing ventured = nothing gained.

BestBuy is just linking to CD Baby. So - you don't have a page for your album on BestBuy.com. Only the page on CD Baby. But BestBuy refers it.

I applaud your efforts on our behalf Derek, but would like to ask you please....

If we go to bestbuy.com's main webpage, the link for the indie CD Baby does not come up. Thus, if I type in the name of a CD baby artist, it is not coming up, - whereas a major label artist's name does. Am I misunderstanding that the CD/indie link is an entirely seperate one, from the main BESTBUY.com page's search box? -- thank you so much for your time and again, for all of your energy and efforts.

Heidi - you'll have to just ask that someone what your deal was - if he named himself as composer, or if you are the 100% composer, and he is just producer. Just ask! As for the program he uses, it's probably fine. Just ask.

I first did a search on the "Search ' Entire Site' for..." at www.bestbuy.com and didn't find my band's album even though they are both registered with CD Baby for digital distribution.

I then read more of this page and saw that I could get to them by clicking 'Music, movies, games & toys' and then clicking 'Music' and then trying to find the 'Independent Music' button and clicking on that... then I found the CD Baby search engine.

Is there ay way they can just merge the two search engines together? Seems like a lot of work for someone to find an indie artist at Bestbuy.com.

    Or did I miss something?

Hey there Derek. Great move with Best Buy. I think this will benefit alot of cd baby members. I had a question though. Say a customer goes to best buy and gets a clerk to search bestbuy.com for an indie artsits' cd. Is there anyway they could order the album but pay for it at the register? Would it be a little complicated sorting the money mad between cdbaby, best buy, and the artist? Reason I'm asking. My artists fanbase is predominantly young females. We've got emails from young fans whose parents won't let them order the cd online. I thought about this new best buy effort and if they could pay for it at the register how much security that would give these parents. If you have any other suggestions or advice on how to deal with that outside of the bestbuy deal. I'm all ears. Thanks for your time

    >> Is there anyway they could order the album but pay for it at the register?

Nope. I wish. Totally out of the question. It'll never happen.

I guess my only suggestion is the girls can:
    (1) - mail a check
    (2) - get a PayPal account
    (3) - mail cash
    (4) - pay nothing, and you send it to them free as a favor in return for telling their friends about you.

If you don't find your CD either:

    1) you're not signed up for digital distribution

    B) you're not doing it correctly. you can NOT just go to bestbuy.com and type in your band/artist name. you have to use the link in the very first post by Derek. Our CD's are NOT on bestbuy.com. Rather bestbuy.com links up with cdbaby.com disguised as bestbuy.com.

I just looked at the Best Buy site. I could not find the CDBaby artists. If I can't find it nobody else will either. Where did they hide us?

Well I'm answering my own question. OK, we are not part of the main music search engine. We are only found with a small button on the lower right. I guess that's better than nothing, but someone is going to need to look for it to find it. If they knew where to look, they probably know where CDBABY.COM is anyway and get it direct.

Best Buy hid the hell out of the link - not cool.

What is not obvious basically does not exist.

Can anything be done about that?

Now that I am registered through itunes and the other 16 digital distributors, how can I link them to my website?

by Derek at CD Baby on Sunday April 15 2007 @ 01:59PM PDT [ reply | parent ]
They won't link to your site, unfortunately. But you can find your music on their site/service, copy the URL, and paste it into your own website to start to let your fans know about it.

My friend, I have a take off song MAZE, but I changed it to a Gosple tune. Back in Strid Again.
I want to avoid copy right problems. I down loaded Conpusaray License's yet some things are not cleair. ie. Who owns the song, copy right. What % of the song did I copy.....
Is there an 800# wear I could talk to a real person?

Why can't cdbaby distribute physical cds to Bestbuy or Target?

by Chris from CD Baby on Monday February 11 2008 @ 01:31PM PST [ reply | parent ]
Honestly, its too costly for them.
    Sad, but true.

The retail shelves at those mega-chains (BestBuy, Target, WalMart) are EXPENSIVE real estate. They make a ton of money renting that space to The Eagles, Britney Spears,... any top 40 album that they don't have to take a chance on. They want guaranteed sales.

Plus, by only dealing with a few major labels/distributors (instead of getting physical stock from lots of little indie-distributors) they keep their processes for ordering, returns, promo deals, etc. more streamlined, cheaper, and without that RISK of dealing with lesser known artists.
