Apple iTunes raises wholesale price to 70 cents in USA
posted by Derek at CD Baby on Friday July 22 2005 @ 06:56PM PDT
    Digital Distribution Good news.

Apple iTunes USA just raised their wholesale payout to 70 cents per download. (The price for the customer remains the same at 99 cents.)

Since CD Baby only keeps an itsy-bitsy 9% cut, (the best rate in the industry!), that means you make 63.7 cents per song.

For the iTunes music stores that are outside the U.S. we can only tell you "about" what they pay - since they pay in the local currency and the exchange rate changes. But here are the recent ave
    rages:

    iTunes Europe: 88 cents
    iTunes UK: 88 cents
    iTunes Canada: 62 cents

Also, you might have heard, but Apple iTunes is launching their iTunes Music Store in Japan and Australia soon. The CD Baby digital catalog will be in both. Cool, huh?

What's that you say? Oh! My! That's so sweet! Well, we love you, too.

    About Time...

Sony BMG Music Entertainment Agrees to $10 Million 'Payola' Settlement

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- One of the nation's biggest music companies, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, agreed Monday to pay $10 million and to stop paying radio station employees to feature its artists to settle an investigation by New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer.

The agreement resulted from Spitzer's investigation of suspected "pay for play" practices in the music industry.

A Sony BMG spokesman didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

But Spitzer said Sony BMG has agreed to hire a compliance officer to monitor promotion practices and to issue a statement acknowledging "improper conduct" and pledging higher standards.

He commended the company for its cooperation.

"Our investigation shows that, contrary to listener expectations that songs are selected for air play based on artistic merit and popularity, air time is often determined by undisclosed payoffs to radio stations and their employees," Spitzer said. "This agreement is a model for breaking the pervasive influence of bribes in the industry."

Spitzer had requested documents and information from EMI, Warner Music Group, Vivendi Universal SA's Universal Music Group as well as from Sony BMG, which is a joint venture of Sony Corp. and Bertelsmann AG.

Spitzer said his investigation showed Sony BMG paid for vacation packages and electronics for radio programmers, paid for contest giveaways for listeners, paid some operational expenses of radio stations and hired middlemen known as independent promoters to provide illegal payments to radio stations to get more airplay for its artists.

Spitzer also said e-mails among company executives showed top officials were aware of the payments.

Spitzer said Sony BMG employees sought to conceal some payments by using fictitious contest winners to document the transactions.

Record companies can't offer financial incentives under a 1960 federal law that made it a crime punishable by a $10,000 fine and up to a year in prison to offer money or other inducements to give records airplay. The practice was called "payola," a contraction of "pay" and "Victrola" record players.

The law was passed in response to the payola scandals of the 1950s and early 1960s that implicated some then-famous disc jockeys.

"Apple recently raised its wholesale payout on iTunes Music Store downloads
to seventy cents per song, offering parity between independent and major
labels. The increase first came to light in a letter sent by Derek Sivers,
CEO of independent retailer CD Baby"

Great news, Derek! Most of our digiital download sales
are through Apple iTunes, so Apple's decision to
increase the payout is very encouraging. Thanks again
to you and everyone at CD Baby for all your selfless
hard work in uploading our tunes to Apple iTunes and
the ever growing number of digital providers. It's the
best idea since...well, since CD Baby itself!

    Gratefully,

    Hi Derek & All,

Got a pleasant surprise this morning! Noticed while checking my 'accounting' on CD Baby that a cheque had been paid out for $50.92. I thought - huh, .92 cents, what's that all about? Well it seems someone bought the complete CD at iTunes. What's so strange or surprising about that - well, it was only delived to them in June!!

Thanks a million Derek and all at CD Baby!!

    I just love digital!

I'd love feedback from you Derek and others as to ideas to market our music to get more digital downloads?

I'm a neophyte at digital marketing, and any ideas are REALLY APPRECIATED.

    All the best,

General question here that I'm certain will be laughed out of the forum, but... how would one go about getting to be one of the 'free' downloads on the iTunes home page? You can keep the money, I want the exposure.

Is that spot reserved for 'signed' artists? Or is there perhaps a waiting list one can get on?

by Derek at CD Baby on Tuesday August 16 2005 @ 02:13PM PDT [ reply | parent ]
Apple listens to things and features ones that they like as a free download. It's something they have to ask us for. To offer is moot - they only choose things they like.
