Statue Records are con artists.
First, they scout CD Baby's site and send out form letters to artists, stating that they are a label and can get you airplay.
The first question I asked them if there was "ANY" money that they expected the artist to pay upfront and they out and out lied and said NO!
Now when you get all involved and happy, then they have a contract they send you saying to send in your packages and they will put it on compilations and send out to stations to try for airplay.
They also say they will make 1000 copies and you can buy back your CD from them at $3.00 a CD.
Then, if you get airplay they have right to sell and manufacture for a percentage.
There is a part in there that says, "oh, by the way, it is recommended that you get us to make you a website for $100" (if they get 1000 groups with this con that means 100k).
After you have sent the contract in then they send you an email back saying that they have received your package but they see you didn't opt for the $100 website so that means you will get no exposure and they will not do this and they will not do that and will not do the other.
(Boy it seems they could be a little smoother with their screwing).
So guess what that leaves? If you haven't paid for a website, you have given them the permission to sell you records back to you and they do nothing!
Raise you hand if you think you will get any airplay (I have a bridge I want to sell you).
This kind of scum and bottom feeders must be stomped out and I advise everyone to go to these sites:
http://caag.state.ca.us/
http://www.ifccfbi.gov/index.asp
Complain about fraud to disuade other bottom feeders fron trying these cons.

Never ever deal with any label that you have to put out money for and if they offer other options such a building you a website, etc. stay away. The only money an artist should have to put out for something like this is the couple of dollars to post a CD and that's it.

Hey John,
Scam indeed it is . Alot of fishy people out there and anyone out there like that is trying to earna quick buck. Any record label that wants you to pay money for services is scum. Most record companies get there money from sales of your music and merchandise. I highly recommend you look into another source for record companies. Thanks for the heads up as most people would do anything to get there music hear and will be impulsive and fall into this scam.
Thanks again

First off what the hell does this mean:
"Distribution Proposal. Warren Ryan"
That sounds like something that would be said over the static crackle of a radio under enemy fire!!!.....maj....warren....come...in!!!crrrrrkkk......maj...???? Distribute food to WHICH IRAQI VILLAGE? HELLO!!!
This is someone that cannot communicate past the level of a five year old and so is this someone that you want promoting your package???
I didn't think so...
Thats not all:
"Here are the general contract terms we are proposing relative to licensing
your product. I am proposing to make CD's of the tracks you have available
now for radio promotion, if statue gets 'AIR' we will get retail orders which
we will fill and you will get a royalty percentage of the sales.
WHAT???
Didn't your grandparents tell you about this "AIR"" thing? Hot Air...
If people are using unknown BS "trade-speak"('yea yea'...'lick me'...) you should understand that your stake is as good as gone...... float away.
Oh, BTW here is a great one:
'imagine'
You have
no[problems in life(added for effect)] cost or expenses associated with this, statue pays all costs associated
with manufacturing and marketing.
I find it ironic that "statue" is so tuned in to "imagining" and "paying for your sht" that they have evolved into an organization that is so completley vague and almost "frozen" in the literal sense of the word that they would actually attempt to spell out terms of an agreement between two consenting partners without any actual terms...
THIS NEXT ONE IS MY FAVORITE:
In addition to "breaking records"(guiness? world? bullshite?) we place some of our music in major motion
pictures such as Warner Bothers(hmm...sp?) "Outbreak"(film that 'Broke Out' ten years ago) featuring Dustin Hoffman, Morgan
Freeman and Donald Sutherland. If you have any questions please do not
hesitate to contact me.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Actually I do have a question. Why didn't you mention the costar in that film? The talented, attractive Ms Renee Russo? I think she's fantastic! Please give her credit where she deserves it dammit!
We are looking forward to launching our new web site in several weeks that
will allow customers to download individual songs or an entire record for a
fee.
If you dont understand the irony of proper grammer misusage, than I don't suppose that you wouldn't understand that.
There are very few that have this powerful new delivery option outside
of the majors.
Major leagues? Wow can I get season tics for the giants???
We are developing a new artist only private section where
act's can see their CMJ and R&R charts and other radio and media proprietary
information along with management and booking agent contacts. Then there is
the new video streaming which we are really excited about.
Well the only video streaming that I'm excited about is when I'm having a little R&R and thats none of your muthrfkn bizness!!
Statue looks forward to working with you and are hopeful that we can come to
an understanding regarding the licensing of your material. If you decide
you want to move forward after reviewing our proposal, please email me the
address where you would want royalty payments sent along with the legal
names of the personnel who will be on the contract. I will have execution
contracts drawn up and then emailed over to you for signature along with
complete signing instructions.
Don't hesitate to write of call me with any questions.
"benderstanding..."

from experience. don't waste your time or money on them. we signed a contract with them and everything went pretty smooth. then after we sent them the $100 to be listed on their site. we did make it to the upcoming releases page. our cd was supposed to have been released on December 6th 2004. and after numerous emails to them asking when it would be available to buy. I stopped by the site last week and our band listing is totally gone from the site. so needless to say they may have been around for awhile but surprising to me that they are. so don't waste your time. I sent an email about this and got a responce saying that they would check the web opts to see what the problem is. that was last week as I said and we are still not listed.

Hi Aarion and everyone else!
We have the same experience as you. Our supposed release date was 1 december and we are also gone from the website now. We also payed the 100$ and we have sent numerous of mails without any response. If their work is not changing in a positive direction in the near future we will give them HELL with bad will all over the world. Hope eveyone else in the same situation do the same thing. Unserious labels cannot exist if we all work together. And we think that there is a lot of us out there. It was at least 10 other bands who disappeared at the same time. Keep in touch!!

Thank's John for starting this thread, I received the Warren Ryan email last night via Soundclick, I always research these companies before deleting the emails :) After I googled Statue Records I came across this thread, it's important these companies are exposed because they feed off vunerable artists who, through no fault of their own, are ready to trust anyone who shows an interest in their music.
If a top record label is interested in your music they will let you know. They will refer to you by by your name and should have some knowledge of your music and any third party who may have pointed you to them. At the very least a decent A&R man would want your phone number to have a chat!

Thanks for this thread, really. My bandmates and I feel pretty abused at the moment now that we know all of this. I received the initial email from Statue through my band's soundclick page as well, and I just kind of shrugged off the poor grammar and terrible spelling because we were excited about this opportunity.
After emailing them back, they sent us the contract which is also riddled with typos and repeated clauses, and I decided to make sure of their validity before we signed and returned this thing with our music. Now that we know they're full of crap, we'll just keep looking for a good label.
Cheers.

We signed with Statue cos no one in Australia is interested in us and wot else are we gonna do to put our music out there? Its only a 100 clams so if we don't sell the required "10 units" per month so be it and we still keep the rights to our songs. ps a good book to read if you haven't already is called THE HIT MEN by Fredric Dannen published by MULLER.

Just wanted to say we signed with Statue... and thats exactly what they are...a solid mass that never moves....except to run from e-mails and phone calls. Bottom feeders, matchstick men, or crooks call em what ya want they dont care. Take say 1000 artist at 100$ per band you do the math, now add in any sale's they make off you as well and....????
This faggot and his friends are making money of good artists and nobody is doing anything about it. This next comment is not a threat but a very possible hypithetical outcome due to the fact that somebody may eventually snap.
Consider this a warning Mr Warren Ryan & co..We have friends in the States that would put a bullet in your skull for less than we paid you to fuck us. Looking forward to reading about you demise.

Can I just say, I have my music on Soundclick and recently I got an e-mail apparently from Warren Ryan offering me a contract with Statue, I haven't signed anything as yet (Probably just as well if all this is going on) as I am still considering it but I don't think I'll go ahead with it now, I'd prefer to work in the UK anyway, where its a bit easier and closer to home, not to mention laws that I am familiar with, as I would not like to get on the wrong side of American laws.
However, having heard all of these stories, I think that taking Statue to court would be a good idea because I don't think with the amount of artists they have ripped off that they would stand a chance.
Now I've heard all of these stories, I'm not going to press ahead with anything. It sounded like a fantastic offer (Although I did check that Statue Records did actually exist) at the time and anyone vulnruble enough would sign the contract. I'm just glad I seen this before I did. So thank you for wakening me up to all of this everyone!.
It one of those things where your just flattered that such person or company has taken an interest in you, but obviously some can be dodgy.
I will upon having read all of this, put together a demo of my own and send it to record companies across the UK and I will do it properly, where I know that everything is being done right and strictly within the law.
Having studied music law, I know what to look out for. I was going to get myself in touch with a lawyer from the UK Musicians Union but I don't think after reading this that I will bother.
Thanks for the alert people, you've just saved me from making a big mistake!!

I've been with CDBABY since 04' and thank God for this service of member/staff shared information provided for 'free' to both members and non-members alike. Today, I opened my e-mail to discover that I've recieved news that an 'Independent Record Company' I. e. Statue Records, found interest in my music and materials and wanted to conduct business with me concerning such... Excited... I immediately went to their given web site and began my basic 'company backgroud check' when the "idea" hit me... "What are you doing, stupid...?! Check with www.cdbaby.net to see if your own people -I. e. CDBABY family- has anything on file about these people...!" and here we are...! Matter of fact I took the liberty of copy/pasting the 'actual' e-mail sent me by Mr. Ryan himself. Take heed:

Obviously I'll not be taking him up on his generous offer.

Better to have found out now before sending money! I knew something didn't sound right when he was asking for $100 up front for some kind of website fee. I have had personal issues with Statue Records...since November of 2004 when I sent them my material, I received the email telling me you will not get anything from us because you did not pay the $100...I was then told they are in receipt of my materials and they will be released in one month...I got no response until February 2005...I then found negative postings and bullitin boards regarding their practices...when I confronted, Warren Ryan & Geoffrey Emory & Nate Degasse of Statue I got this response...
"I am on the road this week, contact me on Monday and we will discuss" - Geoffrey Emory
Never Heard from him...a month later I asked for a response...here's what I got...
"My Best Regards" - Geoffrey Emory & Statue Records...
Basically telling me to F**K OFF!!
I have plagued them with mail and calls...with no response...I have requested my material be returned...no response.
I have a friend who is involved with music laws..he says because he stated he had my material in his possesion and stated he was entering the manufacturing process and stated the material would be relesed in a month...shows INTENT to fulfill his contracted obligations...by refusing to respond and by shutting out the artists and holding material...is a BREACH of CONTRACT..and can be pursued Legally.
I am willing to join with any individuals or a group to bring down Statue Records...the time has come...we work too hard as artists, in a cut-throat business to have to deal with scum like this!!

Hi all
I had a similar experience with Statue records
I was initially contacted by Statue, as a result of visit they paid to my site on Soundclick, It's how they contact artists whose music is of interest to them.
Prior to doing anything I spoke with a number of their artists when I received the initial contact from Statue.
Those that came back to me, confirmed, that they are real, but the results they achieve seem to vary depending upon the experience of each individual.
After spending quite somw time going through the artist contract, I managed to clarify what they do actually do, and what they dont appear to do.
What they do, is to take an artist, and promote that artists material, the contract they issue, which is a standard document to all artists is a promotion and publishing contract only.
If you sign with them, dont expect a recording contract, cause that aint what they do.
The four items that concerned me regarding the contracts were basically these.
Firstly, you pay $100 US to join the Statue website, this fee is not mandatory.
But, and this is a big but, if you don't pay the $100 then statue can drop you from your contract if you do not sell 10 units eg cd's,tapes in any calender month. If you pay, then they hve to keep you on that contract for a calender year.
I elected to pay the price, cause all I'm interested in, is having my music published, and to do it myself would cost me far more.
2: Material, you retain all copyrights to your material and band name. What you allow Statue to do, is market that material, in whatever way they deem is necessary to promote your stuff. If that means giving it away as part of a promotional they will do it.
I gave them 12 songs as part of an album to promote for me. If any of those songs gets used or covered, Statue will only receive royalties from the songs I gave them.
Not to songs they dont have access to. They also allow you to market those songs yourself, so the contract is not exclusive.
3: Statue will re-engineer your music, and will offer you the option to buy your own album back from Statue and market it yourself, they offer a market price for job lots of 10 cd's at a time.
I know some people that have elected to do that, once again, it is not mandatory that you do it. I elected not to go down that path.
4: Royalties: you may get some, but if, and only if Statue manage to sell 100 units eg cd's/tapes.
Statue may manage to get rid of a 100 copies of your album, but they do not include giveaways as part of that.
Any album they give as part of a promotional package will not be counted as a sale.
I was not altogether bothered by this, as I never expect to get any royalties. I spoke to a number of long term Statue artists, and I aint met one yet, who has made a fortune.
It seemed to me that the only advantage of having a contract with Statue is that you have some kind of deal with a company, And there are some artists who have used the Cudos of that, to sign deals with bigger and more well known labels.
So I decided to go for it and signed up with them just under a year ago, sent in my 100$, and decided to wait and see what happened.
To this date, I have heard nothing from them either by email, or letter. So I visited their site to find that my artist title and album details had been removed completely from the site, I'm not even listed on the artist roster anymore,
This sort of made me a bit curious, so I looked up some of my earlier contacts and discovered, that I probably got the boot because I never purchased any of my albums from Statue.
My belief was that the contract was a promotion contract, and therefore, that was what I had paid them to do.
I seem to have been very wrong, what they want you to do, is send in your music, they will repackage, and in some cases, engineer it for you.,They then sell it back to you. So you can do your own promotion and sell the cd's they sold to you.
They sell your own cd from their website, only if someone visits the site and purchases the cd through statue's own purchase page, or if someone comes via a link from your website. So from what I see, the promotion is all self promotion.
You supply the means, and they pocket a sizable portion of whatever profit may be made from your work. Provided you as the artist are able to sell over a 100 copies of your music through the statue site.
Here endeth my gripe, I have emailed them on a number of occasions. As yet there has been no reply. And to be honest from reading these threads, I don't expect one
If there is a moral to the story, you as the reader can be the judge, I went into the deal with my eyes open and having done all the research. The one governing factor was that I had no grand expectations what so ever. As such, I was not dis-illusioned.
all the best

Yes, I had the same experience about 2 weeks ago. Warren Ryan claimed he got my information from mp3unsigned artist website and stated Statue Records was interested in my materials. I sent back the contract but didn't send the $100.00.

We are an Australian band who received the Warren Ryan email a week or so ago. Yes, as a student of music production we covered record contracts and I was very interested in the contents of the contract that was subsequently sent to us. I was very suspicious as no comments or rating votes were left by Statue at our mp3unsigned website.
I spoke to the drummer a minute ago who said one of the guitarists read some bad message boards relating to them. I'm not surprised.......
And to anyone who thinks $3.00 each for a copy is cheaper than it would be to print and press a CD yourself are wrong. Ask around some manufacturing companies, it ain't that expensive. The big expense is in recording and mastering.
Thanks anyway for the heads up.

recent email sent to statue
HEllo Geoff,
well its been over a year signed with your label, and just curious what the $100 was for. I mean, come on, "available now" with no links to purchase the cd. and don't blame it on the website change, cause I have been keeping an eye on both and nothing. our cd isn't even listed on the new site. I know building websites takes some time. but since we have signed with you. I have built numerous sites to promote our music. it takes about a total of 20 minutes at the most to make a webpage and place a link.
since you are the one to contact me and offered me to sign. I think it is up to YOU to PERSONALLY see that our cd has a link to purchase and our name listed in the artist roster.
like I've told you numerous times before, I went through alot of shit to be able to come up with the money to get "listed" on your site. and I fail to see what we paid for.
so here is the thing, since it is passed our cutoff date to break the contract if this issue isn't resolved soon and our cd isn't available (not just saying available and no link) then I WILL expect my $100 back to give back to the people that gave it to me to be "listed" on your site.
some of the people are not even in the band and they contributed a bigger percentage than those who are. and I would like to be able to send them some cd's for thier trouble. but it is hard when there isn't even a link to "buy" the damn thing.
and I will be forced to take legal action and cancel our contract next year.
I don't want to do this because I have faith in what you are trying to acomplish but my faith is just about to its wits end. since it has been over a year and still nothing from Statue.
I hope you understand where I am coming from. when you buy something you expect to get what you paid for and for it to be what the seller said it was. well you are the seller, I paid you now see that you hold up your end of the deal.
a good faith gesture.....how about you send me some of our cd's, 20 should do for now, as a good faith gesture so I can at least send them to the people that gave the money. I think that is worth the hassle of all the emails and questions I get on when the cd version of From The Ashes will be available for sell.
you should already have my snal mail to send the cd's but here it is again
p.s. I don't want to hear that I need to talk to someone else, I don't want to hear that the website is being updated. or any of the other excuses you have given me this past year.
I just want you to do what the hell is right buy your name and company. prove everyone wrong and get us listed properly, and do us right

Hi guys,
So glad to hear that finaly everyone is starting to hear about statue records. They offered us a contract about 2 years ago. All the same bullshit as people have mentioned on this message board. We didn't send $100 as we smelt the bullshit tidlewave right from the start. We all know old Mr Emery is running a scam and where there's a scam TAX or REVENUE is proberly not being declared to the IRS or Inland revenue. We mentioned this to him at the time and his website vanished for about 3 days. What would make him shit his pants is, if everyone found, sent or made a phone call to the nearest tax office in the state he has his company set up and told them the scam old bollock chops is running. Or even e-mail this complete message board to the American tax/IRS office. Once they know a shark, he's card is marked for life with them.
Peace Out. UK Bulldog The Shaaaaaaaaaadow.

I just received an email from the aforementioned con artist.
If you want CD's made, try www.musiciansfriend.com and their disc making website www.diskfaktory.com I got CDs made with black lettering for $1, I think about$3 for the whole works, cover, case, etc.
Thanks for the warning about this company!

I got their scam email today and was all excited. It just seemed too good to be true so I decided to google them and am damn glad I did. I hope all that were ripped off can get justice. My email from them was from a Jim Monroe. They must be under new management. LOL! Here is what they sent me:Regarding the materials on your web site.
I am interested in the materials on your site. Statue is a major independent record company and would like to discuss the possibility of releasing this material and doing some radio promotion on it.
In this regard we would press up some CD’s at our cost, send them to Radio and see if we could get some air. Where you get air you have a demand for retail which we would fill and pay you a royalty for each unit we sell.
If your record is available for licensing and distribution please contact me at your earliest opportunity by sending me an email to ar2@statuerecords.com
Best Regards,

Just my $0.02 to all this hassle. Wben you receive ANYTHING which might seem an astonishing opportunity or even a plain business message (and this scam looks just right) your first action MUST be looking to the full RFC headers of the message. And this scam email is sent not from Statue, but from some unkown email provider, it's clearly stated there. For me, it's enough not to waste my time even to reply to them.

A picture says a thousand words and if you look at Statues contact page at their website you will find a photo of a telephone which is sitting in a huge empty warehouse. Says it all really.

| NOTE: If you need a reply you should email CD Baby directly instead of posting here. We don't often read old message board postings, and have no way of replying to them!
