Help FMC bring Health Insurance to the top of its 2005 Agenda!
Dear FMC supporter:
We want to work on health insurance for musicians and we need your support!
Since 2000, Future of Music Coalition has reframed the challenging issues at the intersection of music, law, technology and policy to address the needs of musicians and citizens. In 2005, there will be over fifty issues that impact musicians in the courts, on Capitol Hill, at federal agencies and internationally. We will be working to keep artists and citizens in the mix.
Our work is only possible due to the generous support of foundations, sponsors, and individuals. The more money we raise, the more issues we can take on. In the coming year, we want you to help us help musicians to get information they need to insure themselves against the costs of sickness or injury.
For $15 - the price of a CD you can help one musician negotiate the confusing health insurance landscape. For $50 you can help four musicians. If you can afford more, you can help more... and your contribution is TAX DEDUCTIBLE!
Here's how it works. In spring of 2005, FMC will establish a musician's health insurance hotline. Musicians who want help picking an affordable plan can call this number and get patient, thoughtful, intelligent advice from insurance providers (who are also musicians). We are not kidding you. Your donations will be collected to cover the costs of running the hotline and paying the insurance experts a reduced fee for answering health insurance questions as they come in.
Why is this important?
Almost three years ago FMC conducted a survey about musicians and health insurance. We learned that the musicians we surveyed were three times less likely to have health insurance than the national average. We found that this was regularly due to confusion about what plans were available for musicians, what type of coverage was necessary and other common problems. We also learned that many of the existing plans did not have dedicated staff to help translate the confusing health insurance landscape to potential customers.
Health insurance should not be a luxury. There are many good existing plans and there are organizations working in coalition with major foundations to offer better solutions in the future. In the mean time there are real human beings out there on the road, making music and getting sick without coverage.
We hope this hotline will serve as a bridge between what exists now and what could be built in the future.

That sounds good. From what I anticipate concerning the new media music business, a comprehensive health care plan for musicians as well as other feeders in the industry will need
a good up front policy. Some of us will need psychotherapy and others will need physical rehabilitation from those free wheeling baseball
bats after that dreaded misunderstood contract.
I'm no pitch man for CD Baby; it's just about your best bet. . !

Sounds great. Hopefully not too good to be true.
I'd be interested to know what criterion FMC will base ones
eligibility for this affordable(?) health insurance.
