Hello everyone.
I frequently visit this board and read the threads that many CD Baby members post.
I myself will be joining CD Baby next summer when I get ready to drop my album.
Now, I'm curious to know something.
I'm doing pretty good so far with my music independently. Even had some pretty big opportunities arise such as music licensing, overseas touring, and garnered label interest.
I think I'm at the point where I can/should have an entertainment lawyer.
I'm sure that they can help out with so much.
I'm just trying to see who out there has a entertainment lawyer representing them and if they can give some advice?
Such as what to look for in an lawyer, paying, things like that. I also hear lawyers are the best way to shop your material to labels nowadays.
If you can give some good info, please post.
Thanks!

First, try getting the name of a lawyer from someone you know. I was told by the gentlemen that I will be using is there will be a retainer fee first. Then when ever I need papers draw his other staff would do that for a small fee.
My suggestion is ask several people. Know what you want from your attorney. Get someone you feel you can trust, but keep your eyes open.

I am an entertainment lawyer who specializes in music and video, and recently published a book titled The Future of the Music Business, How to Succeed with the New Technologies, A Guide for Artists and Entrepreneurs (Backbeat Books 2005)

I can't tell you exactly how to go about finding one, but I can agree with Paula in that you should talk to people you know (other musicians in the business) that have an entertainment attorney and ask some questions. I met mine through a mutual friend and it turns out that he is one of the hottest ones out there. He handles Metallica, Faith Hill, Courtney Love, Tim McGraw, Meredith Brooks, etc. I have only had him do one thing for me and they had me sign a contract that basically showed me their fee schedule (which is outrageous, but normal I guess) and it cost me like $250 to have them draw up some papers for me regarding publishing percentages when I was dealing with another publishing company. There are a million of them and they all have one thing in common & that's money....that's what they look for, so if you can meet one through a friend you have a better chance of being dealt with as a person rather than a dollar amount. Not much help, but some direction anyway.

I have one entertainment lawyer and one Intellectual Property lawyer, both of whom I can recommend highly.
The first is Craig Harmon with McGuireWoods in Richmond, VA; the second is James Tilly with Tilly Law Firm in Tulsa, OK.
Both can be contacted via email.
