Top-Sellers in September will be on special compilation
posted by Derek at CD Baby on Wednesday September 01 2004 @ 12:53AM PDT
News from Inside We're always trying to do more things to help promote your CD. Here's something you can take advantage of:

    THE CD BABY SAMPLER

    What is it?
a CD sent along with every single order we sell.

    How many songs?
10 audio tracks. 80-90 mp3 tracks. All on one CD. (meaning: anyone with any CD player can hear the first 10 songs. Then anyone with a cd-rom drive and an MP3 player can hear the other 80-90 songs.)

How do I get on it?
On October 2nd, we'll tally the 100 best selling albums from September 1-30, and contact you for permission. We're only going to count how many CDs were SHIPPED as of midnight on September 30th.

The #1-10 will be audio tracks, and #11-100 will be MP3 files. Then we make 5000 CDs, and give them to the next 5000 customers in November and December.

That's not fair! My music is great but I'm not a top-seller!
Last time we did this, the top #100 seller had only sold 30 CDs! I'm suuuuure you can sell 30 CDs in a whole month of trying. Get creative. Try a new approach. Reach some new fans.

Does it cost anything? Do we get paid anything?
Nope. Nope. I'm paying for the cost of it myself, as thanks for your business, and in hopes of turning on our customers to albums they might not have noticed last time they were at CD Baby.

But you'll ask my permission, right?
Right. On October 2nd, if you're a top-100 seller, I'll email to ask your permission.

    What song will you use?
I'll ask you on October 2nd, if you're a top-100 seller this month, which ones you give us permission to use. Then we get to pick a track from those, in order to make it a well-flowing album.

Will we get credit on the album cover?
Yep. It's a thin cardboard sleeve so it will fit with every order. But the back cover lists every Artist Name, Album Name, Song Name, and CD Baby web address.

    What to do now?
Go promote! We'll do the counting. (No fair buying your own CD, or asking your mom to buy 100 copies. Karma, baby.)

Do sales at live shows count?
Nope. Only CD sales sold through cdbaby.com - so we can track it fairly and accurately.

    Wait I have more questions!
Please click here first and read last year's announcement of this same promotion. It will answer most of your questions, I'll bet.

This is probably obvious, but remember that this CD will be going to people who buy CDs online. Meaning: the very people that are most likely to come back and buy your CD. It's the best targeted promotion you could ask for.

How about the $5 dollars specials? I sell a bunch of CD's when you run that promotion. How about running that in September to help my cause??

by Derek at CD Baby on Wednesday September 01 2004 @ 08:44AM PDT [ reply | parent ]
The $5 specials are ALWAYS running. Those sales count, yes. To get on it, just log in to your members login area at http://members.cdbaby.com -- then click EDIT ALUBUM INFO - then edit the OPTIONAL things at the bottom of the list.

    Gray (at CD Baby) makes an excellent point on his post at http://cdbaby.org/stories/04/05/05/0708571.html ;

    - "we've seen artists (that don't necessarily move large amounts of CDs from www.cdbaby.com) sell incredibly well on iTunes and other services."

    This raises the question;

To tally the TRUE best selling songs, shouldn't digital sales be accounted for, especially since they are almost always a direct result of CD Baby? (Even though they may have been downloaded from Rhapsody, i Tunes, et al..., the digital sales are usually a result of CD Baby's digital distribution program!)

It occurs to me that including digital sales may introduce a logistical difficulty which makes it prohibitive, and if that is the case I can certainly understand excluding them. You guys are doing alot for us already, and I know I speak for alot of individuals when I say we appreciate it. However, if including digital sales is not too much trouble, I think it should be done for fairness sake, for as Gray points out, some individuals sell more in the digital realm for some reason. Just my 2 cents. Thanks, Jeff

    >> To tally the TRUE best selling songs, shouldn't digital sales be accounted for

We'd have to wait months for the results. Plus it's only song-by-song. Plus... well... we're a record store. :-)

How many CDs on average did the top sellers move in one month last year??

is this cd compilation going to be genre-specific or is it literally the top 100 shipped albums ?

by Derek at CD Baby on Thursday September 02 2004 @ 12:49AM PDT [ reply | parent ]
top 100 shipped albums, with no editorial bent. just the facts.

Do digital sales through CD Baby's efforts count toward the top 100 contest.
Keep up the good work and we all thank you.

Note: due to many complaints and misunderstandings last year, I DID combine an artist's albums into one this year. For example if someone had two different albums on CD Baby and sold 20 copies of each, I counted it as if the top-selling one had sold 40 copies.

Doing it that way served two purposes: (1) it kept many artists from clogging the list (otherwise Dan Zanes would have been like 5 of the top 100!) (2) it gave a fair shot to people who had multiple albums that sold under 37 copies each, but combined got them on the chart.

    Hey Derek,
This is Jake Ramirez, I do promotions for Big Blue C, . I just signed up David Ramirez to your store and had a question about wether or not you were going to be holding the top 100 sellers contest in September. I saw the board for last year and thought that was a cool idea. I've been reading through all your sites the past couple weeks and it amazes me how much you do for people. If you could get back to me about the compilations that'd be awesome! Take care.
