I am a new artist with one CD so far. I have begun selling my album on CD Baby, iTunes, etc. and sending it to radio stations and others in the music industry.
Should I join a PRO or is it too soon? If so, which one -- does it really matter? And what about SoundExchange?
Thanks,
Jordan

Dear Jordan,
Now that you've made your songs commercially
available, you should definitely join a PRO. My
understanding is that there isn't a lot of difference
between BMI, ASCAP, or SESAC, but you should check
out their sites and see for yourself.
I don't know much about Sound Exchange, but I think
that they do for the owners of sound recordings, what
the PROs do for songwriters and composers.
I'd be curious to know if other CD Baby artists have had
any experience with them.

The interested to sign with BMI, SESAC or ASCAP is:
First, protect your songs.
Second, send you album to radios station and win money everytime they play your tracks!

Dear Jordan,
I noticed that you've received some questions regarding the performance rights organization SoundExchange. SoundExchange is a performance rights organization that administers licenses for the use of sound recordings in non-interactive, digital media. You are correct that SoundExchange performs a similar function for the owners of sound recordings as the other performance rights organizations do for publishers and composers. However, SoundExchange also distributes royalties to the "featured artist" of the sound recording, meaning that the person or band that actually played the song receives a royalty, regardless of who wrote it or published it. Artists and sound recording copyright owners can receive a royalty from SoundExchange in addition to any royalties received from other licensing sources.

I am very interested in this as I am in the process of picking one... does anybody have any resources that detail the differences? are there any fees? will they represent an author/publish worldwide or only nation-wide?

I joined BMI at the end of December 2004. My musi is on 340 radio stations worldwide and I have yet to see a penny. However - it has only been a few months and most stations only report quarterly. The nice part is, my songs are licensed and protected and the organization itself holds conferences, venues, etc.. No there are no fees - they get their money from the stations, tv, etc paying the license fees to play the music they license. It's nice actually.
