Esquire Magazine cover story names CD Baby "Record Store of the Future"
posted by Derek at CD Baby on Tuesday November 11 2003 @ 03:44AM PST
News from Inside ESQUIRE MAGAZINE PROCLAIMS CD BABY "THE RECORD STORE OF THE FUTURE"

Esquire Magazine's annual "Best and Brightest" cover story has named CD Baby "the record store of the future".

A small online retailer of independent music, CD Baby is praised by the feature article, saying "[CD Baby founder] Derek Sivers is changing the way music is bought and sold." "Musicians' savior …one of the last music-business folk heroes."

Esquire says, "The music industry has ignored what should be both its bread and butter (new talent) and the basis of a new business model (sharing the wealth). Fortunately, Derek Sivers has filled the gap."

CD Baby is one of the independent music world's greatest successes. With a catalog of 50,000 CDs available for listening and purchase on cdbaby.com, CD Baby has created an outlet for musicians to sell their music directly to a worldwide audience, bypassing traditional record labels and distribution.

In the company's five year history, CD Baby has paid over $5 million to independent musicians for CDs sold - now nearly $100,000 a week. Over 600,000 customers have shopped at cdbaby.com, with its unique presentation of music unavailable anywhere else.

Why do artists choose CD Baby over chasing the elusive major label pipe dream? Sivers is quoted, "We're seeing more and more artists decide they're happy selling ten thousand albums and making $100,000 than selling three hundred thousand records on a major, being broke, and having to answer to people."

The December 2003 Esquire cover story is subtitled "38 Radicals and Rebels Who Are Creating a New World" and features architects, politicians, actors, inventors, and entrepreneurs.

Earlier this year Derek Sivers won the 2003 World Technology Award in the field of entertainment.

The article ends with Sivers summing up the need for CD Baby.

"It's not about world domination, it's about being the cool, friendly store across the street from the big, unfriendly store," he says.

    About CD Baby
CD Baby is an online record store that sells CDs by independent musicians. Founder Derek Sivers was selling his CD online in 1997, and he eventually asked a few friends if they'd like to sell their CDs online, too. Friends told friends and CD Baby officially launched in March 1998. To date, CD Baby has 50,000 artists using their services, has sold over 600,000 CDs to customers worldwide, and paid over $5 million dollars to musicians. Based in Portland Oregon, CD Baby is now the largest seller of all-independent CDs on the web. For more information visit http://www.cdbaby.com.

I read it. What a wonderful story! It also mentioned the categorization by music type and area and the simplicity of the site. If it attracts even one more "civilian" (musicians and insiders already know about it) to the site to peruse and by, it will be worth it!

GOOD WORK DEREK, KEEP IT UP YOU'RE CHANGING THE FACE OF AN INDUSTRY WE HAVE GROWN TO LOVE, ONLY BY THE ADVERTISMENT OF WEALTH AND NOT A REAL LOOK AT THE POINTS PER ALBUM AS WELL AS A PROMOTIONAL BUDGET (IF YOU GET 1) THAT WILL SURELY TAKE EITHER A PLATINUM ALBUM OR A LONG MARATHON AT RETAIL(SALES), IF THEY DONT SEND IT BACK AFTER 90 DAYS.
DONT MENTION VIDEO COST, GET SERIOUS:VIDEO ADVERTISMENT>EDITOR>FILM>DIGITAL>VIDEO PLACEMENT>DIRECTOR FEE'S>LOCATION COST>WARDROBE>BLING-BLING (YEAH YOU GOTTA COMPETE)
YOU ARE RIGHT ON THE 1 DEREK, I TRUELY BELIEVE IN 7 YEARS, MUSIC STORES AS WE KNOW THEM TO DAY WILL NOT EXIST, THINK ABOUT IT. IF YOU KNOW ANYONE HIGH SCHOOL AGE THROUGH COLLEGE, GO WHERE THEY KEEP THEIR MUSIC AND YOU WILL SEE SCORES OF BLANK CDR'S WITH PLAIN WRITING ON THE CD WITH THEIR FAVORITE ARTIST.(DOWNLOADED OR BOOTLEG)

THE DAY OF THE OLD WAY IS GONE, INFORMATION ON ARTIST CAN BE FOUND EVERY WHERE NOT JUST WHEN YOU BUY THE ALBUM.(INSIDE COVERS AND CREDITS)

SO THE INTERNET IS THE WAY TO GO, DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION WILL BECOME THE TROJAN HORSE OF MUSIC STORES>THINK ABOUT> BUT WHILE WE HAVE ACCESS TO IT, WE WILL USE THIS TO OUR ADVANTAGE>COST>CHEAPER, MUCH CHEAPER,>NO POSTAGE,GROUND FEES,STORAGE COST> SIGN ME UP.
ONCE AGAIN THANKS CDBABY YOU'RE A
    GOD SEND!!!!!!!!!
