| ISRC codes for your music - REQUIRED for digital distribution! |
About ISRC Codes - BACKGROUND:The ISRC (International Standard Recording Code) is the international identification system for sound recordings and music videorecordings.
Each ISRC is a unique and permanent identifier for a specific recording, to help identify recordings for royalty payments. It's assigned PER TRACK, not per CD.
It stays with a recording, so that if that same recording is re-released on a different CD (like a soundtrack).
Notice I'm saying "recording" not "song", because it has nothing to do with the song underneath. If you (or anyone) records different versions or remixes of the same song, each track should have its own ISRC code.
ISRC CODES ARE FREE. No service charge. (Unlike the UPC Barcode.)
All digital-download stores require them. I hear European radio requires them, too.
How to get ISRC codes for your musicPay attention here, because what I'm about to say is different than ANY other info you'll find out there:
Since this is an international standard, each country was assigned a 2-letter country code (US, FR, JP, etc.)
Each country can then give up to 32,768 "Registrant Codes" to companies in its territory. A registrant code was intended to be for a record label. Then the label/registrant would assign up to 100,000 "Designation Codes" per year. That's one per sound-recording (per-track).
Everything was fine until the army of independent artists came along, needing ISRC codes for Digital Distribution. Why? Because there are 47,000 independent artists on CD Baby! If every artist faxed in the form to the RIAA, requesting a registrant code, the whole system would break! It would be like assigning every available phone number in the country in one day.
So... I talked with the great helpful folks at the IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry) office in London. And the helpful folks at the RIAA. And we've got it all worked out.
CD Baby is allowed to assign you ISRC codes - FREE - and we'll do all the reporting of information back to the IFPI/RIAA for you. All with a single click inside your members login area. Everything will be registered as YOU - not us - using the info you have on file with us. Same as if you had done the paperwork and filed out the fax, except we'll be using up less registrant codes in the system. (They assigned CD Baby a few registrant codes, and I wrote a program that can assign you your own permanent valid ISRC codes there on the spot.)
IN SHORT: IF YOU GET YOUR ISRC CODES THROUGH CD BABY, YOU ARE ALL SET - THERE IS NOTHING ELSE YOU NEED TO DO. NO FAXES. NO FORMS. NO WAITING.Just log in to your members area at https://members.cdbaby.com - and click "EDIT ALBUM INFO" next to your CD. You'll see the "REQUIRED INFO" area, where you can have us assign them.
Why did I go to all the trouble of hooking this up? Because I want you to be able to get your music out there into the paid-download services that require them. And this was a major hurdle.

RIAA's informational page about ISRCs: (read FAQ at the bottom) http://www.riaa.org/issues/audio/isrc_faq.asp
If you run a record label with many releases, you may want to get your own ISRC registrant code, by downloading the form, and faxing it to the RIAA:

DEREK -OUTSTANDING SYTEM IDEA! And as always, thanks for putting it in plain english.
Does anyone know how long it takes to receive the ISRC code back, after faxing in the application? I'm not finding it in the ISRC FAQs. I guess it depends on how many people are rushing in their faxes this week...
Our indie label has quite a few releases coming up so we may as well get it done.

the RIAA usually gets back to you with an ISRC client code within a couple days of receiving your fax.

DOH! Now I see it:
Q. How long does it take for the RIAA to assign a Registrant Code?
A. It takes 24 hours from our receipt of the request form. The request form can be faxed to us.

1) what happens when you re-order your CD? don't you have to put that code number somewhere in the digital file of each song, or on the cover or somewhere?
2) why do you recommend that a record label get its own ISRC, what is the difference if, as you state here, that each song will get its own number through your services, and that number just goes w/ the song, doesn't change if ownership or anything but the actual recording itself changes?
thanks,

#1 - if you re-manufacture the CD, yes just tell the manufacturer what your ISRC codes are and I think they can embed them into the CD itself, somehow. (Not visible. Only readable by computers or something.)
#2 - there's really no other advantage to doing all the work to sign up yourself. it's just that if you're a record label with dozens of releases you might as well assign the code yourself instead of having us do it for you.

are isrc codes the same as ascap's title codes? for example I looked up one of my tracks on the ascap site and it said: 2ND FLIGHT
(Title Code: 501251872)
does this mean my titles already have isrc codes? this # may just be something for ascaps records now that I think of it.
No. Totally different. I think that # is only for ASCAP.

Do I need to burn this code into each track of my CD and resend new stock to CDBaby? Or is this just for thge digital disti releases?
No need to do anything. The ISRC is kept in the database for us to use for digital distribution, and for you to use if you need it for any future use.
If you do a re-pressing of your CD, it would be smart to tell the CD manufacturer your ISRC codes. That's why we put them there on your page for you to see, print, copy, etc.

We send them within a couple weeks of you signing up. Then it's up to the end-service (those companies) for how long it'll take them to get you up and selling there.

Is the ISRC Code the same as the song code that you
get from Harry Fox Agency? (You get the song code
when you go to Songfile.com and apply for mechanical
license from HFA).
No no no! VERY different. Remember:
- Harry Fox Agency is concerned with THE COMPOSITION (the words and music). The Harry Fox ID# is used ONLY by Harry Fox.
- ISRC codes are for THE RECORDING (the actual finished master recording, no matter what song it is)

Can I use my ISRC for other projects or should I send that in before manufactoring the new project. Do you handle and online sign up for BMI. Thanks Derek for show us artist how to do it and do it right, mad luv playa........

(1) - Yes once you ask us to assign you ISRC codes they are totally yours for all future time (for THOSE recordings - not others!) So any time if you're going to RE-manufacture the CD, definitely log in and get your ISRC codes from your account, and give them to your CD manufacturer.
(2) - We don't sign up to BMI for you. Whether you sign with ASCAP, BMI, or SESAC is up to you and a totally separate thing we will NEVER touch on your behalf.

By the way there is another album comming up and another being recorded...never stop .
The BBC of London have made a special TV program about your humble servidor and I have posted interview clips on my page and have recently performed for Prince Charles and the Queen, !never thought that they would like my Salsa Picante....anyway thank you in advance for your help.
